Sanatoriums Near Baku: The Absheron Cluster (Mardakan, Bilgah, Shikh) 2026

Six sanatoriums operate on the Absheron peninsula around Baku: Garangush and Gunashli in Mardakan, Miras and Absheron Sanatorium nearby, Bilgah Cardiological Sanatorium in Sabunchu, and Shikh Sanatorium at Bibi-Heybat, according to Azerbaijan's state tourism board. All of them belong to the same owner, a trade-union holding company, and each treats a different condition. Pricing runs budget-to-mid rather than the luxury tier of Chenot Palace Gabala.

Why the Absheron cluster is owned and priced differently from the resorts

These are not hotels. All of the Absheron sanatoriums belong to Kurort, a closed joint-stock company of the Azerbaijan Trade Unions Confederation, and none of them appears on Azerbaijan's state register of star-classified hotels, because sanatoria are classified separately. That single fact explains most of what feels odd about booking one.

It explains the missing English website, because the demand comes through union channels rather than through search. It explains the missing star rating, which is not a quality signal here but a category boundary. And it explains why the rates sit where they do: a union sanatorium is priced for a domestic and Russian-speaking patient base on a voucher, not for an international wellness market. If you arrive expecting a Chenot-style product at a Chenot-style price, you will misread every part of this cluster.

What sanatoriums are near Baku?

Six, per Azerbaijan's state tourism board: Garangush and Gunashli in Mardakan, Miras and Absheron nearby, Bilgah Cardiological in Sabunchu, and Shikh at Bibi-Heybat. The trade union's own property list adds a seventh on the peninsula, the Buzovna Physiotherapy Center, which the tourism board's cluster page leaves out.

All six of the tourism board's set are listed as active by Azerbaijan's state tourism board, which groups them as the "Absheron cluster" alongside the better-known Naftalan, Duzdag, and Qalaalti resorts further from the city. Mardakan sits about 30 km northeast of Baku, Sabunchu north of it, and Bibi-Heybat right at the city's southern edge.

The Buzovna facility is worth knowing about precisely because it is missing from the state page. AHIK describes it as two four-storey sleeping buildings for 90 people plus a two-storey medical building with a dining room, treatment and examination rooms, and massage rooms. We do not list it in the comparison below, because we have no specialty for it from either source, but if a Russian-speaking relative mentions a Buzovna sanatorium and you cannot find it on the tourism portal, that is why.

Who owns the Absheron sanatoriums?

Kurort Closed Joint-Stock Company, which belongs to the Azerbaijan Trade Unions Confederation. They are union assets rather than private hotels or Ministry of Health facilities. AHIK issues sanatorium vouchers centrally through its Kurort Tourist Information Center and an electronic reservation system it calls e-AHIK, and runs a loyalty scheme on top.

That ownership matters more than it sounds. It puts all seven peninsula facilities, plus the Kurort Naftalan health centre, the Daridag arsenic-water centre in Nakhchivan, the Shafa sanatorium in Qakh and a cluster of Guba-Khachmaz recreation bases, under one operator with one voucher system. A single point of contact is genuinely useful when a family wants two conditions treated in one trip. It also means a policy change lands everywhere at once, and it means the published information is as thin or as thorough as one organisation chooses to make it, which in practice is thin.

The practical consequence for a foreign guest: there is no booking engine to fill in. Admission runs through the operator, usually against a physician's recommendation, and the paperwork is in Azerbaijani or Russian. That is the piece we handle.

Which Absheron sanatorium treats what?

The facilities split by specialty rather than competing on the same condition, so the right one depends on what a physician has already diagnosed, not on which is closest to Baku. Capacity and address come from AHIK's own property list; distances come from the state tourism portal.

Two oddities in that table that we would rather point at than paper over. Miras and Absheron Sanatorium are both given at number 95 Sergey Yesenin street in Mardakan, by two different sources, which either means a shared site or a transcription error we could not resolve. And Shikh's street number is given as 4 by the tourism portal and 45 by AHIK. Neither affects which facility a physician means, but both will affect a driver, so we confirm the address with the facility before a transfer rather than trusting either page.

Garangush publishes one detail the others do not: sea swimming for five to six months of the year, which is the closest thing this cluster has to a season. Everything else here runs indoors and year-round.

What does an Absheron sanatorium cost?

Nothing per-facility is published in English. The one property in the same union group with a retrievable 2026 tariff is Kurort Naftalan, at 180 AZN for an economy single up to 240 AZN for a senior suite. That is the order of magnitude, not the Absheron rate, and we quote the real figure on request.

Two caveats on any number you see for this cluster, including ours. AHIK's own property page carries no date, so the bed counts above may be several years old; we present them as published rather than as verified for 2026. And the voucher system means a rate quoted to a union member is not necessarily the rate quoted to a foreign guest paying directly. We ask both questions when we price a stay, and we would rather come back with one honest figure than publish a range that turns out to be a member rate.

What is Shikh Sanatorium (hydrogen sulfide baths)?

Shikh Sanatorium, at Bibi-Heybat about 10 km from Baku, treats musculoskeletal disease with thermal baths built around hydrogen sulfide, combined with iodine and bromine mineral water, across 175 beds in two buildings. The rationale is a plausible anti-inflammatory effect from sulfur compounds absorbed through the skin, but clinical trial evidence specific to hydrogen-sulfide balneotherapy is limited; most of the supporting literature is observational rather than randomized.

That evidence gap matters more here than at the other facilities, because hydrogen-sulfide baths carry their own contraindication list, separate from Naftalan's or Garangush's. Physicians typically screen out cardiac disease, acute inflammatory conditions, active cancer, and pregnancy before clearing a patient for the course. If a doctor has recommended Shikh specifically, confirm the contraindication screening with them before you book, not after arrival.

One operational note that says something about the place. AHIK describes Shikh's medical histories, treatment rooms, accounting and dining as linked into a centralised system it calls a pilot project, which is the only sign of digitisation anywhere in this cluster. If you want a facility that can hand you a printed record at the end of a course, it is the one to ask first.

Is Bilgah Sanatorium the same as Bilgah Beach Hotel?

No, and this is the mix-up we hear most often. Bilgah Cardiological Sanatorium, at 94 R. Ojagova street in Bilgah village, Sabunchu district, about 40 km from Baku, is a clinical facility treating cardiovascular disease across 406 beds, 70 single rooms and 168 doubles. The Bilgah Beach Hotel is a separate leisure resort on the same stretch of coast, formerly operated under the Jumeirah brand, built around its Talise Spa rather than a cardiology program.

The two share a place name because they sit in the same coastal district, not because one is a wing of the other. If a physician has referred you to "Bilgah" for a cardiac program, that is the sanatorium; if a travel agent or hotel search has shown you "Bilgah" for a beach stay, that is the Beach Hotel, and it has no clinical cardiology service. Tell us which one you actually need when you request a quote, since we book both and they are entirely different products.

The sanatorium's site is larger than most people expect for the price: medical and sleeping buildings, one and two-storey cottages, a dining room, a club, a sports ground and a tennis court, on iodine-bromine mineral water. It reads as a Soviet-era resort campus, because that is what it is.

How do you reach the Absheron sanatoriums?

All of them sit within roughly an hour's drive of Heydar Aliyev International Airport and central Baku, since Mardakan, Sabunchu, Buzovna and Bibi-Heybat are all towns on the Absheron peninsula rather than separate regions. Shikh at Bibi-Heybat is closest at around 10 km; Gunashli is about 35 km and Bilgah about 40 km.

There is no shared shuttle service connecting the facilities, and each runs its own admission process through the union's voucher system. Because the Mardakan addresses are not individually published with distances, we confirm the exact drive with the facility rather than estimating from the district.

What we wouldn't recommend

The Absheron cluster is good value and easy to misread. Almost every problem we see comes from applying hotel logic to a sanatorium.

• Comparing them by star rating. They have none, by design. Sanatoria sit outside Azerbaijan's hotel classification entirely, so a missing star here means nothing at all.
• Booking before a physician has named the facility. These are single-specialty sites. Picking the nearest one and hoping is how a guest spends two weeks in a neurology centre with a kidney complaint.
• Assuming the bed counts are current. They come from an undated owner page. Useful for scale, not for a rooming list.
• Expecting an English booking flow. There is not one, at any of them. The paperwork is Azerbaijani or Russian and it runs through a voucher office.
• Trusting a name. Bilgah, Absheron and Miras all have namesakes on the Baku hotel market. Confirm the address, not the brand.
