Sanatoriums & Medical-Wellness in Azerbaijan: The 2026 On-Ground Guide

Naftalan crude-oil sanatoriums, Chenot Palace Gabala, Duzdag salt-cave therapy, and the wider Qalaalti and Absheron balneology network, covered by the Baku DMC that runs these stays on the ground rather than lists them from a booking portal.

What this covers

Two wellness products, run by one Baku ground handler

Azerbaijan runs two distinct wellness products side by side: crude-oil balneotherapy at Naftalan and the wider sanatorium network (Duzdag salt caves, Qalaalti mineral springs, the Absheron cluster), and physician-supervised longevity programs at Chenot Palace Gabala. Birtour is a Baku ground handler, not a clinic. We run the transfers, the sanatorium check-ins, and the hand-off to each venue's own medical desk on both poles.

This hub covers what each destination is used for, what the evidence supports, current price bands, and how a stay gets booked, for travelers planning a course and for tour operators sourcing net rates for resale.

By the numbers

The market behind this cluster

  • 012,626,700 foreign visitors arrived in Azerbaijan in 2024, up 25.9% year on year. Russia accounted for 27.8% of arrivals and Türkiye 16.2% (State Statistics Committee).
  • 02Naftalan crude-oil therapy exists commercially in only two places on earth: Naftalan, Azerbaijan, and Ivanić-Grad, Croatia, where the oil is refined rather than used raw.
  • 03Chenot Palace Gabala runs 6,000 m² of medical-spa space across 75 rooms, suites, and villas, with programs booked in 7-night minimum blocks.
  • 04A presidential decree signed 28 September 2024 named Naftalan the flagship of Azerbaijan's medical-tourism strategy.

Chenot Palace Gabala

Chenot runs physician-supervised 7-night programs about 30 km outside Gabala town, roughly 220 km and 4.5 hours from Heydar Aliyev International. 2026 published rates start from AZN 7,800 for the 7-night Advanced Detox program and run to AZN 10,600 for Prevention & Ageing Well; room-only rates are separate and start from roughly AZN 750 per night. Chenot Group runs the property and the clinical program. Birtour holds net rates and books the stay; we are not the operator.

  • 7-night minimum, supervised diet, physiotherapy, and rest built around the property's own clinical team
  • 100+ on-site specialists across 6,000 m² of dedicated spa and treatment space
  • Birtour books the stay and the Baku transfer; Chenot Group runs the clinical program
  • Net rates available to tour operators reselling the program

Affordable medical wellness02

Naftalan, Duzdag, and the balneology network

The affordable pole prices per night rather than per program: room, board, and a physician-set treatment plan bundled into one all-inclusive rate, typically $70-210 depending on the property and season (2026 rates). Naftalan's roughly 14 active sanatoriums use the town's naphthenic crude oil for 8-15 minute supervised baths; Duzdag in Nakhchivan runs salt-cave speleotherapy for asthma and chronic bronchitis; Qalaalti and the Absheron cluster add mineral-water and balneology courses closer to Baku. None of this is a cure. The one randomized trial behind naftalan therapy studied oral lichen planus, not psoriasis; the rest of the evidence is observational.

  • Naftalan is roughly 330 km and 3.5-4.5 hours from Baku, about 1 hour from Ganja, where most groups route through
  • Course lengths run 7, 10, or 14 days, set by the sanatorium's physician after an intake screening
  • Best-supported uses are psoriasis and dermatoses in remission, plus inflammatory joint pain, not the 70-plus conditions resort brochures list
  • Birtour holds net rates across the Naftalan cluster for tour-operator resale
