F1 Baku 2026 race week: schedule, grandstands, hotels, and road closures

The 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix races on Saturday 26 September at 15:00 Baku time, with practice from Thursday 24 and qualifying on Friday 25. As we re-read the promoter's ticket board on 22 August 2026 the race had not run: Baku sat about five weeks out, round 15 of 23. What follows is the logistics layer we brief every group on, whatever tickets they hold: which stand, which hotel, which metro station, and which streets stop working.

Why race week reorganises central Baku, not just the circuit

The Baku City Circuit is 6.003 km of public street through the government quarter, the seafront boulevard and the rim of the Old City. Closing it takes roughly nine days, not a weekend. That one fact drives every decision below: the hotel, the coach plan, the metro station, and how long a 500-metre walk actually takes.

Three consequences fall out of it, and they are the ones we argue about with clients every year.

• The hotel is a logistics decision, not a comfort decision. A property inside the perimeter is walkable to every gate and unreachable by car for the better part of a week.
• The coach plan is the last thing you can fix, not the first. Until the promoter publishes the 2026 closure notice, any coach routing inside the loop is a guess.
• The seat and the bed have to be chosen together. Crossing the circuit on foot happens at fixed overbridges and underpasses, so the wrong side of the track turns a 5-minute walk into a 25-minute detour.

Has the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix already happened?

No. On 10 August 2026, when we last re-read the calendar, Formula 1 was in its summer break and the Baku round was still about six weeks ahead. It is round 15 of 23, two weeks after Madrid on 11 to 13 September and one weekend before Bahrain on 2 to 4 October.

That calendar position is worth stating because the aggregators disagree with the sport. Several sites that rank well for Baku queries call it round 17 and put Singapore after it. We take the running order and the session times off formula1.com and the promoter's own timetable, and where the two disagree with an aggregator we go with the sport. Azerbaijan's hosting contract also runs through 2030, announced in September 2025, so a group programme built here has a multi-year runway rather than a calendar risk to hedge.

When is the 2026 Baku F1 race weekend, day by day?

Track action runs Thursday 24 to Saturday 26 September 2026 and the race starts at 15:00 Baku time on the Saturday, scheduled over 51 laps or a 120-minute maximum. Practice one and two are Thursday, final practice and qualifying are Friday. Tickets are sold as a four-day window opening Wednesday 23 September.

This is the first Saturday race in the event's history, moved forward a day so it does not fall on Remembrance Day, 27 September. Formula 2 is the support series and there is no sprint, so the weekend keeps the standard three-practice shape. The promoter's schedule page labels its rows by weekday without dates or a timezone; the times above reconcile exactly with Formula 1's own UTC listing, which is how we date them. Session times can still shift, we re-verify this page monthly until the race, and the travel-day consequences of the Saturday finish are worked through in our Saturday-race planning post.

What did the 2026 rules change about picking a seat?

DRS was deleted for 2026. In its place, a driver within one second of the car ahead at a detection point gets an extra 0.5 MJ of energy for the following lap, called Overtake Mode, alongside a Boost Mode and movable front and rear wings available every lap. Overtaking is no longer pinned to two fixed zones.

This is not trivia. A large amount of the Baku seat-selling copy still online sells a stand on where the DRS zones used to be, and those zones no longer exist anywhere on the calendar. Baku's own Overtake Mode detection point had not been published as of 10 August 2026, so we do not tell a client where the passes will happen. We sell the main straight and the Turn 1 braking zone on the physical fact that they sit at the end of a run of roughly 2.2 km, which is a feature of the street rather than a regulation that can be deleted. The castle section is the narrowest stretch of track on the calendar at about 7.8 m, which is the other thing worth watching in person rather than on television.

Two more 2026 changes matter to a corporate host. The grid is 11 teams and 22 cars: Cadillac joined as the first new constructor since 2016, running Bottas and Pérez, and Sauber now races as the Audi works entry. That is an American manufacturer with a US corporate following and a German one with a DACH following, both of which show up in hospitality demand from exactly the markets that buy Baku.

Which grandstand should you pick at Baku?

Grandstand tickets cover Wednesday to Saturday. Pick on what you want to watch, then check the stand is still on sale: when we re-read the promoter's board on 22 August 2026, seven of the stands below were gone. The table pairs the seat-by-seat view with that late-August availability read.

The comparison draws on The F1 Spectator's seat-by-seat reviews and the official circuit map, with the availability column read off the promoter's shop on the date shown. Five weeks out the set had shifted since our 10 August read: Sahil, which then showed two seats left, was gone, Champions had come back at 1,150 USD with a limited-seats badge, and the board had stopped showing seats-remaining counts altogether. Note the naming trap in that Champions row: Grandstand Champions and the Champions Club hospitality product are two separate line items, and on 22 August the grandstand was on sale while the hospitality product read sold out. General admission still works at Baku, and the best unreserved spots sit between Giz Galasi and Mugham on the boulevard, claimed early each day.

How do the road closures work during Baku race week?

The 2026 closure schedule had not been published on 10 August 2026. Plan against the shape of the rule instead: streets inside the circuit shut for roughly nine days, access inside the perimeter runs on a Resident Access Permit, and designated crossing points open to through traffic for two short windows a day.

One warning before the detail, because this is where a wrong date gets published. The closure notice that ranks first for 2026 queries on the circuit operator's own site carries a "FORMULA 1 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX 2026" header over 2025 body text, and its dates end before the 2026 weekend even starts. We link it below as the 2025 precedent it is, not as a 2026 schedule.

The 2025 notice set the pattern we plan against:

• Streets inside the circuit and the surrounding area closed from 15 September at 01:00 until 23 September at 08:00, about four days before the first track day through two days after the race.
• Pushkin Street, between Uzeyir Hajibeyov Street and Neftchilar Avenue, closed earlier, from 12 September at 01:00.
• Access inside the perimeter ran on a Resident Access Permit only.
• Designated entry points opened to through traffic on 15 to 17 September from 07:00 to 09:00 and 18:00 to 20:00, and on 18 September from 07:00 to 09:00 and 20:00 to 22:00. Those windows were transit only: stopping to load or unload passengers was prohibited except in emergencies, and trucks and public transport were not permitted.

Pedestrian movement is not restricted. You cross the circuit on foot via overbridges and underground passages at fixed points, and the perimeter does not open up in the evenings, so a hotel on the wrong side of the track can turn a 5-minute walk into a 25-minute detour. Taxis in the center are close to useless during race week; locals cross on foot and ride the metro, and so do our groups. We hold the coach plan editable until the 2026 notice publishes, and we tell clients that in writing rather than quietly.

Where should you stay for the Baku Grand Prix?

Position beats star rating in race week. A hotel inside the circuit perimeter is walkable to every gate and unreachable by car for days. A hotel just outside keeps its road access and loses the walk. Decide which of those two your programme needs before anyone looks at room photographs.

Inside or on the perimeter sit the Four Seasons at the Azneft corner, the JW Marriott Absheron and the Radisson over the start-finish area, and the Promenade fronting the track. All are walkable to everything and all sit behind the closures, so car access is restricted and arrival logistics need planning. Teams and drivers stay at the Hilton Baku and the JW Marriott Absheron, at either end of the paddock. A short walk outside the perimeter, the Fairmont at the Flame Towers, the Hyatt Regency and the Marriott Boulevard trade the track view for unrestricted road access. The Crescent Hotel, at 230 rooms, is the newest sizeable addition to the trackside-premium set.

Two warnings we give every group. First, the race-week premium here is the steepest on the calendar: Simon-Kucher's 2025 study of 2,800 hotels across 24 Grand Prix destinations put Azerbaijan at +281% against the preceding weekend, against a 105% average across all host cities. That study predates the Saturday move and nobody has published what a Saturday race does to the demand curve, so we work on the assumption that the peak shifts back a night, Wednesday to Friday rather than Thursday to Saturday, and we label that as an assumption when we contract. Second, apartment listings advertising "trackside balcony views" have burned fans repeatedly, including through major booking portals; if a balcony view matters, book a named hotel room category you can verify.

How do you get out after the race, and what about Sunday?

The race ends by late afternoon on Saturday. Three metro stations serve the circuit and the post-race crush is real. A Saturday-night flight is reachable on paper; we plan group departures for Sunday morning instead, and we keep Sunday 27 September, Remembrance Day, free of anything celebratory.

The stations are Icherisheher on the Old City side, and Sahil and 28 May about 700 metres from the main straight. A ride costs 0.60 AZN with a BakiKart, the flat fare Baku Metro has charged since 1 October 2025. In past race weeks the metro and bus network ran extended hours, roughly 06:00 to 02:00; the 2026 arrangements had not been announced when we checked on 22 August, and either way you should plan for full trains in the first hour after the flag.

On the Sunday we are direct with guests. The airport run crosses a city still unwinding its closures, and 27 September is Azerbaijan's national day of mourning for the 2020 war: at noon the whole country stops for a minute of silence, traffic included. It is not a day for a programme, and we say so before the contract rather than after. A quiet morning, a respectful departure, and the airport transfer logistics handled the same way as any other day.

Where do you buy 2026 tickets, and what is still on sale?

Buy from azerbaijanf1.com, the promoter's own ticket shop, or from F1 Experiences, Formula 1's official hospitality programme. bakucitycircuit.com belongs to the circuit operator and carries news and closure notices rather than the ticket board. Everything else selling Baku race tickets is a reseller working on its own margin, whatever the domain name suggests.

On the promoter's board on 22 August 2026, the stands on sale ran City at 650 USD, Mugham at 870 USD, Icheri Sheher at 910 USD with a limited-seats badge, Azneft, which the board now sells under the PASHA Real Estate name, at 960 USD, Champions, back from sold out, at 1,150 USD with limited seats, Absheron A, B, D and E at 1,490 USD and the covered Absheron C, now split into separate C Upper and C Lower line items, at 1,580 USD each. All are four-day tickets quoted as adult prices, 16 and over, with junior prices for ages 2 to 16 listed separately for the first time. General admission has changed shape too: the 239 USD three-day roaming ticket is gone, replaced by a Thursday-to-Saturday General Admission Ticket at 180 USD. Our 10 August reading of this page ran City 749, Icheri Sheher 799, Mugham and Sahil 879, Azneft 959, Absheron A, B, D and E 1,659 and Absheron C 1,759 USD; the late-August board supersedes it. The lesson is still not that prices only rise. Nearly every stand on the 22 August board was cheaper than two weeks earlier, Champions came back from sold out in the same window, and Sahil went the other way and disappeared. The promoter releases and reprices held inventory as the weekend closes in, and released seats do not sit long.

What we would not recommend for race week

Five things we argue against on a Baku race-week programme, none of them a matter of taste. Each is a place where a group booking goes wrong weeks before anyone notices, and three of them come straight out of what the promoter and the circuit operator have not yet published for 2026.

• Do not plan coach movement off the closure notice currently online. It is 2025 body text under a 2026 header and its dates end before this year's track action begins.
• Do not book apartments advertising trackside views outside contracted stock. Fans have been defrauded on exactly this in Baku, including through major portals.
• Do not buy a seat on where the DRS zone used to be. DRS was deleted for 2026 and any guide still selling it is nine months out of date at best.
• Do not seat guests in Bulvar. It was rated the weakest view for the money before it sold out, and we would not have put a group there at any price.
• Do not schedule a Sunday celebration. Remembrance Day is not a date to negotiate around, and a client who finds out late will remember who told them.

What we have left out on purpose: the 2026 road-closure dates, Baku's Overtake Mode detection point, and any claim that the track layout is or is not changed for 2026. None of the three had been published on 10 August 2026, and we would rather carry a gap than a guess.

How does a group actually run the week?

Arrive Wednesday or Thursday, put the city experiences on Thursday and Friday around the sessions, race Saturday, depart Sunday. That is one hotel night fewer than a Sunday-race year, a real line on a 30-person budget. Arrivals, transfer waves through the closures, and the hotel block are the ground layer we run.
