F1 Baku 2026 race week: schedule, grandstands, hotels, and road closures

The 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix races on Saturday 26 September at 15:00 Baku time, with practice from Thursday 24 and qualifying on Friday 25. It is a standard weekend, not a sprint. Central Baku streets inside the circuit close days in advance, hotels on the perimeter sell at a premium, and the smart moves are all about position: which stand, which hotel, which metro station. When is the 2026 Baku F1 race weekend, day by day?

The 2026 edition is the first Saturday race in the event's history, moved forward one day so it does not fall on Remembrance Day, 27 September. The session times listed by Formula 1 as of July 2026:

Formula 2 runs as the support series. The slot is standalone on the calendar, two weeks after Madrid and two weeks before Singapore, so there is no fly-away congestion on either side. Which grandstand should you pick at Baku?

Most grandstand tickets are valid Wednesday to Saturday. The honest comparison, drawing on The F1 Spectator's seat-by-seat reviews and the official circuit map:

How do the road closures work during Baku race week?

The Baku City Circuit is a street circuit through the government quarter, the seafront boulevard, and the rim of the Old City, and race week reorganises the center around it. The 2026 closure dates were not yet published as of July 2026, but the promoter's pattern from recent editions is consistent:

• Partial restrictions begin up to two weeks before the race; streets inside the circuit close fully from roughly four days before first practice, at 01:00.
• During build-up, designated entry points open in timed windows (typically 07:00 to 09:00 and 18:00 to 20:00) for residents and permitted vehicles. Residents inside the perimeter hold access permits.
• Roads inside the loop act as transit corridors only: no stopping, no parking, no trucks, no public transport.
• Traffic returns roughly two days after the race.

Pedestrian movement is not restricted. You cross the circuit on foot via overbridges and underground passages at fixed points, and the perimeter does not open up in the evenings, so a hotel on the wrong side of the track can turn a 5-minute walk into a 25-minute detour. Taxis in the center are close to useless during race week; locals cross on foot and ride the metro, and so do our groups.

Where should you stay for the Baku Grand Prix?

Position beats star rating in race week. Hotels inside or on the circuit perimeter, Four Seasons at the Azneft corner, JW Marriott Absheron and the Radisson over the start-finish area, the Promenade fronting the track, are walkable to everything but sit behind the closures, so car access is restricted and arrival logistics need planning. Teams and drivers stay at the Hilton and the JW Marriott, at either end of the paddock. A short walk outside the perimeter, the Fairmont at the Flame Towers, the Hyatt Regency, and the Marriott Boulevard trade the track view for unrestricted road access.

Two warnings we give every group. First, race-week rates at the international chains carry a serious premium and the circuit-side inventory goes early, so the room block is the first thing to lock, months out. Second, apartment listings advertising "trackside balcony views" have burned fans repeatedly, including on major booking portals; if a balcony view matters, book a named hotel room category you can verify.

How do you get out after the race, and what about Sunday?

The race starts at 15:00 Saturday and ends by late afternoon. Three metro stations serve the circuit: Icherisheher on the Old City side, and Sahil and 28 May about 700 metres from the main straight. During race weekend the metro and bus network runs extended hours, roughly 06:00 to 02:00, a ride costs 0.30 AZN with a BakiKart, and the post-race crush is real: plan for full trains in the first hour.

A Saturday-night flight out is arithmetically possible and we are asked about it every year. We plan group departures for Sunday morning instead. The airport run crosses a city still unwinding its closures, and Sunday 27 September is Remembrance Day, Azerbaijan's national day of mourning for the 2020 war: at noon the whole country stops for a minute of silence, traffic included. It is not a day for a program, and we tell guests so plainly. A quiet morning, a respectful departure, and the airport transfer logistics handled the same way as any other day.

Where do you buy 2026 tickets, and what do they cost?

The promoter's own shop at bakucitycircuit.com is the primary source, and F1 Experiences sells official packages. Most other sites selling Baku race tickets are agencies reselling at their own margin, whatever their domain name suggests.

On the official shop in July 2026, adult grandstand prices (VAT included, valid Wednesday to Saturday) ran from 770 USD for the Azneft stand to 1,100 USD for the City Grandstand, 1,500 USD for Absheron A, B, D and E, and 1,670 USD for the covered Absheron C sections. Prices step up between release tiers, so treat these as the mid-2026 reading, not a promise.

The pattern that works: arrive Wednesday or Thursday, put the city experiences on Thursday and Friday around the sessions, race Saturday, depart Sunday.
