Baku airport to the city: the H1 bus, Bolt, taxis, and private transfers (2026)

Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD) sits roughly 24 km northeast of central Baku, a 25 to 40 minute drive outside rush hour. You have four ways in: the 24/7 H1 Airport Express bus at 1.30 AZN, a Bolt ride at roughly 10 to 25 AZN, the official airport taxi at a negotiated 30 to 40 AZN, or a pre-booked private transfer. What are the ways from Baku airport to the city center?

The drive-time range is real, not padding. The official airport timing for the bus run to 28 May station is about 30 minutes, and road traffic stretches a car journey past 40 minutes in the 8 to 10 am and 5 to 7 pm windows.

Does the Baku airport bus run at night?

Yes. The H1 Airport Express, operated by BakuBus, has run around the clock since August 2024: every 20 minutes from 06:00 to 23:15 and every 45 minutes overnight, per the airport's official page. The route runs Terminal 1, Terminal 2, Surakhani Bridge, the Koroglu metro hub, and ends at 28 May metro station next to the Central Railway Station. The buses carry dedicated luggage compartments.

Payment is the one catch. The airport's own page says BakiKart only, no cash on board, and the card machines outside Terminal 1 arrivals take cash manat without giving change. Other official sources list bank cards and phone wallets as accepted on board, and the statements conflict. Our advice to partners is boring and reliable: put 5 manat in coins or small notes in your pocket, buy the 2 AZN card at the machine, load a few trips, and skip the ambiguity.

Is Bolt or Uber available at Baku airport?

Bolt operates at GYD with a designated airport pickup point shown in the app, in classes from Economy up to Business. It is the app most Baku residents use. The global Uber app does not work in Azerbaijan; a separate local Uber AZ app exists, and Yango covers similar ground. The legacy dispatcher is 189 Taxi (call center 189, its own app), which travellers consistently review as the most expensive of the app options.

Traveller-reported pricing for an app ride to the center spreads from about 10 to 25 AZN depending on class, time, and demand. We deliberately publish that as a range: anyone quoting you one exact number for a demand-priced ride is guessing.

How much is the official airport taxi?

Baku Taxi Service, the state operator, keeps a rank outside Terminal 1 with a booking booth inside the terminal, a 1000 call center, and marshals managing the pickup line. The fleet is London-style cabs in two classes. The airport's taxi page lists the tariff structure but not the rate figures, so there is no published number to compute a fare from, and travellers report 30 to 40 AZN to the center as the going rate. Agree the figure before the bags go in the boot. Waiting is charged after 15 minutes.

How do I avoid being overcharged at Baku airport?

The patterns travellers report on TripAdvisor's Azerbaijan forum repeat across years, and all of them have the same fix. The three to know:

• "The app price is only the starting fare." It is not. The in-app price is the price. Drivers quoting 40 to 64 AZN in cash on a 15 AZN booking are the most-reported version.
• "Cancel the ride and pay me cash." Cancelling moves you outside the app's pricing and its complaint trail. Decline, keep the booking, pay by card in the app.
• A surprise "parking fee" on arrival. Airport drop-off and pickup costs are the driver's line, not a surcharge invented at the kerb.

None of this is unique to Baku, and the volume is lower than in the region's larger hubs. But an arriving guest at 2 am with no local currency is the target profile, which is exactly why we put every group guest on a pre-assigned vehicle with the price settled before wheels-up.

What about fast track and the VIP lounge?

A Fast Track lane operates at passport control, and the airport's VIP services run through the official provider VIP Group: lounge with private rooms, porter service, apron transfer by car to the aircraft, and priority parking, booked online or via the short number *1888. No public price list exists, so treat any figure a reseller quotes as their markup, and book direct or through your ground partner.

How do group and MICE arrivals work at GYD?

The mechanics favour groups more than most airports. Arriving passengers exit customs into a meet-and-greet area at the center of the arrivals hall, which is where name boards and hosts wait, and the airport keeps a dedicated parking lot for large coaches. The kerbside drop-off lane is limited to 3 minutes, so coaches stage from the lot and pull up on call.

When is a pre-booked private transfer worth it?

Our honest split, the same one we give partners. A solo traveller or couple with a smartphone and no time pressure does fine on Bolt, and an overnight budget arrival does fine on the H1. Pre-book when any of these apply: more than four travellers or serious luggage, a first-time visitor landing for a programme you are responsible for, a VIP or anyone your client will hear complaints from, or a tight onward connection to the regions. The transfer is the first twenty minutes of your guest's trip; it is cheap insurance on the whole programme.
