What you see
  • A mountain cascade falling through dense oak and beech forest in the Oghuz foothills
  • A short walk along wooded trails on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus
  • A picnic-and-trout day out, with grilled river trout a local fixture
  • Quiet, green scenery that pairs naturally with a Sheki visit

Most travelers reach Khalkhal on a day out of the Sheki area, drawn by the contrast: after the painted rooms and fortress walls of the town, a green forest and the sound of falling water. The cascade sits west of Sheki in the Oghuz district, near a village called Xalxal, and it works best as a relaxed half-day rather than a tick-the-box stop. Here is where it is, how to get there, when to go, and how it fits a Sheki trip.

Where is Khalkhal Waterfall?

Khalkhal Waterfall is in the Oghuz district of north-western Azerbaijan, on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus. It lies near Xalxal village, about 15 km north-east of Oghuz town, in oak and beech forest. One point causes constant confusion online: this is the Oghuz waterfall, not a site in Sheki itself, and not in Khachmaz on the northern coast, which some pages wrongly claim. A separately named village also exists in Sheki district, so when you search or book, specify Oghuz.

How do you get to Khalkhal Waterfall?

Drive to Oghuz town first, then follow the mountain road toward Xalxal village, and walk the final wooded stretch to the falls. From Baku the run is about 4.5 hours by road, which is why most people fold it into a Sheki itinerary rather than a same-day return from the capital. There is no public transport to the falls, so a private car or a guided day trip is the realistic option. The last section is forest track and short trail, better on foot.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring and early summer are the months to aim for. Snowmelt from the Greater Caucasus feeds the cascade then, so the water runs fullest and the surrounding forest is at its greenest. Through late summer the flow eases and the scene grows calmer. In winter, snow on the upper road can limit access, so check conditions locally before you commit to the drive. The falls are open forest with no ticket office, so plan around weather and daylight rather than opening hours.

Is the walk hard, and what should you bring?

The walk in is short and manageable for most visitors, but the trail is natural ground, uneven and slick near the water, especially in spring spray or after rain. Flat, sturdy shoes with grip make the difference. Bring layers, since the forest stays cooler than the lowlands, and pack water and a snack. Many people come specifically for a picnic by the river, and grilled river trout is a regional fixture worth trying if a roadside spot is serving it.

Can you combine Khalkhal with a Sheki trip?

Yes, and that is the natural way to do it. Oghuz borders Sheki to the west, so the falls slot neatly into a day out of the Sheki area or a westward transfer day. On our 6-day Azerbaijan cultural tour we visit Sheki in the morning, then add Khalkhal on the way toward Naftalan and Ganja, which keeps the long western leg varied. Treat it as a green half-day between the cultural stops rather than a destination in its own right, and it earns its place on the route.

Frequently asked
Where is Khalkhal Waterfall?
Khalkhal Waterfall is in the Oghuz district of north-western Azerbaijan, near Xalxal village, roughly 15 km north-east of Oghuz town. It sits on the wooded southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus, west of Sheki. It is not the same as the similarly named place in Sheki district, so confirm Oghuz when you plan.
How do you get to Khalkhal Waterfall?
Most visitors drive to Oghuz town, then continue along a mountain road toward Xalxal village and walk the final wooded stretch to the cascade. From Baku it is about 4.5 hours by road. A private car or a guided day trip is the practical way in, since public transport does not reach the falls.
What is the best time to visit?
Spring and early summer are the strongest months. Snowmelt feeds the cascade then, so the flow is fullest and the forest is green. By late summer the water drops and the picture is quieter. Winter access can be limited by snow on the upper road, so verify conditions before you set out.
Is the hike to Khalkhal Waterfall difficult?
The walk is short and suits most reasonably fit visitors, but the forest trail is uneven and can be slippery near the water, especially after rain or in spring spray. Wear flat, sturdy shoes with grip. There is no formal ticket gate; the falls sit in open forest and are free to reach.
Can you combine it with a Sheki trip?
Yes, and that is the usual routing. Oghuz neighbours Sheki to the west, so the falls fit a day out of the Sheki area or a transfer day onward. On our 6-day cultural tour we pair it with the morning in Sheki before continuing west toward Naftalan and Ganja.
What is there to do at the falls?
The draw is the setting: a cascade in oak and beech forest, a short walk to reach it, and a shaded riverside for a picnic. Grilled river trout is a regional fixture and a common reason people come. Plan a relaxed half-day rather than a quick photo stop.
