The Maiden Tower stands where Baku's sandstone Old City meets the Caspian seafront. It is the historic symbol people identify first, but three different subjects are often mixed together online: the present museum visit, the uncertain age of the structure and the legends attached to its name.
Ticket price and opening hours
The Icherisheher reserve museum page publishes a 19 AZN foreign-adult ticket, 9 AZN for foreign visitors aged 5–17 and 5 AZN for local adults. It lists the tower as open every day from 10:00 to 19:00. Tickets are sold at the tower desk and are separate from the Palace of the Shirvanshahs.
Allow 45–60 minutes. The internal route rises through eight stone levels to the roof. The staircase, enclosed interior and exposed viewpoint matter more than the distance: travellers with limited mobility should assess the route at the entrance.
How old is the tower?
There is no single proven construction year. A Kufic inscription is associated with a 12th-century phase, while the reserve and UNESCO's description refer to evidence for earlier structures. Defensive tower, lighthouse, observatory and religious building are interpretations rather than one settled conclusion.
This uncertainty is part of the visit. Museum displays explain the archaeological hypotheses; the popular stories about a ruler's daughter belong to folklore and should be read as legends, not the building record.
What can you see from the roof?
The roof gives a compact orientation to Baku: the lanes and walls of Icherisheher, the Caspian waterfront, Baku Boulevard and the modern skyline. Continue uphill through the Old City to the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, rather than returning through the same streets.
The tower is one component of the UNESCO property, not a standalone World Heritage listing. UNESCO inscribed the Walled City of Baku with the Shirvanshahs' Palace and Maiden Tower in 2000.
