Sheki Caravanserai: the silk-road merchants' inn, and how to visit

Most visitors to Sheki see the Khan's Palace and drive on. The caravanserai is a ten-minute walk downhill, it is by far the larger building, and nobody sells a ticket for it: you walk in through the gate. Two of these merchants' inns survive on the same avenue, and the upper one, the building on this page, is the one that trades as a hotel. What is the Sheki Caravanserai?

A merchants' inn on Akhundzade Avenue in Sheki, northwestern Azerbaijan, built in the 18th or 19th century and properly called the Upper Caravanserai, Yuxarı Karvansara. It is a trapezoidal block of about 6,000 square metres folded around an arcaded courtyard, with roughly 300 rooms and storerooms over two floors and one arched gate onto the street.

Five caravanserais worked here in the 18th century and two are still standing, a few hundred metres apart on the same avenue. The street façade of this one runs about 14 metres high. Sources date the pair to the 18th and 19th centuries without separating them, so treat any single year you see for this building as an estimate. Merchants kept their goods in the cellars, traded on the ground floor and slept above, and the gate was shut at night, which made the building a strongbox as much as an inn.

The courtyard is the part that surprises people. Two storeys of arches run the whole way round it, stone channels carry water across the floor, and a raised platform sits in the middle where merchants once did business in the open. The silk trade put this building up to hold goods and people safely overnight, and it still reads that way from inside.

Can you stay in the Sheki Caravanserai?

Yes, in the upper building. It trades as a hotel, with old merchants' chambers converted into guest rooms opening off the arcade and a restaurant in the courtyard. The lower caravanserai a few hundred metres away has been closed for restoration with no reopening date published, so the choice-of-two picture you will read online is out of date.

That resolves half of what this page used to hedge. The other half stands: sources still disagree on how many rooms the converted wing holds, and we are not going to print a figure we cannot stand behind. Here is what holds regardless. The converted rooms are a small fraction of the chambers in the building, they open onto the courtyard inside thick stone walls and low doorways, and the fabric of a protected building sets the limits on what can be fitted into it. Ask for a courtyard-facing room rather than a number of stars.

The packaged Japanese departures from April 2027 stay overnight in a Sheki caravanserai rather than visiting one for an hour. That is a group booking into a small room count, and it is part of why those dates sit nine months after the first departure of the series.

What does it cost to visit, and when is it open?

Nothing, and nobody publishes hours. We re-read the state channels on 11 August 2026: no caravanserai ticket appears on the Reserves Management Center list or on iTicket.az, which sells every other ticketed site in Sheki. The courtyard belongs to a working hotel, so it keeps a business's day rather than a reserve's gate hours.

Two corrections come out of that table. The first is the price: the 9 AZN figure that still sits on most travel pages for the Khan's Palace and for Kish was superseded on 1 January 2026, and a guest who budgets from it arrives 6 AZN short at each gate. Local prices did not move. The second is the calendar: the "closed Mondays, 10:00 to 18:00" line that dominates search results for both sites is not supported by the ticketing channel, which was selling fifty consecutive daily sessions at 09:00 to 19:00 when we looked.

What we will not do is give you the caravanserai's own courtyard hours. They exist on travel sites; they are not published by anyone with authority over the building, and an hour printed here is an hour a guest plans a morning around.

Why is the caravanserai on the VIVANT itinerary?

Because Sheki is the one Azerbaijani location named among the eight where season 2 filmed, and the caravanserai itself appears in the season 2 announcement video. TBS began the season on 26 July 2026 in its Sunday drama slot. Japanese interest in a building most guidebooks give three lines to climbed before the first episode aired.

The attribution matters more than the fact, so here it is. The lead cast stayed in Azerbaijan for two months from August 2025 and filming took place at eight locations inside the country, Sasaki Masaaki, Yahoo News Japan expert commentary, 24 July 2026. That commentary names Sheki as one of the eight and Baku as a filming location in a photo caption; it identifies none of the rest. Hankyu Travel's itinerary labels six sites as filming locations, which is that company's own designation rather than an announcement.

That is one departure more than the July press release carried: a 3 May 2027 date at the top of the price range has been added since, per the live booking grid read on 22 August 2026. How do you get to Sheki from Baku?

Two roads. The M2 covers about 360 km in roughly four and a half hours on smooth asphalt. The shorter road through Shamakhi and Gabala is about 304 km but takes nearer five hours, because it climbs into the southern foothills of the Greater Caucasus. There is no airport at Sheki; the nearest is Zaqatala, about 90 km away.

Most pages, this one included until today, quoted the short distance next to the fast time. They do not belong to the same road. Pick by what you want out of the day: the M2 if the point is to arrive, the Shamakhi and Gabala road if Diri Baba, the Shamakhi mausoleums or a Gabala stop are going on the way. Either way it is too long a road for a day trip, which is why Sheki is an overnight on our 6-day Azerbaijan cultural tour.

Once you are in town the caravanserai is easy to find. It is on the main avenue of the old quarter, roughly a ten-minute walk downhill from the Khan's Palace along a winding street, and the gate is visible from the road.

When should you go, and what else is close?

Late spring through autumn, and October is the best of it around Sheki, when the foliage in the foothills turns and the courtyard is still comfortable to sit in. Allow about 45 minutes for the building if you go up to the gallery and look into the arcade properly. Everything else worth seeing is within a short walk.

The old town of Sheki with its shebeke workshops and halva houses spreads around the caravanserai, and the Khan's Palace is uphill at the top of the same street inside the fortress walls. Fifteen minutes further north, up into the hills, the Church of Kish sits in its village. UNESCO inscribed the historic centre and the palace as one property in 2019 under criteria (ii) and (v), at the committee session held in Baku that year, which is the honest reason to give Sheki a night rather than an afternoon.

On timing inside the day: groups reach the palace when it opens at 09:00 and come downhill afterwards, so the courtyard fills through the late morning. If you are staying in Sheki, look at it in the evening instead, when the arcade is lit from the rooms and the day visitors have gone back to Baku.

What we would not recommend

Three things. Do not plan Sheki as a day trip from Baku. Do not walk down to the lower caravanserai expecting to get inside, because it has been closed for restoration. And do not leave a group booking in the upper one late, because the converted rooms are few.

Taking those in turn. Nine to ten hours of driving for forty-five minutes in a courtyard is a bad trade, and the palace closes at 19:00 whichever road you took. The lower building carries no reopening date, and a restoration in this country is not a fortnight.
