Azerbaijan for Israeli travellers: visa, flights, two clocks and the month you pick
explainer · 4 min read
Plan an Azerbaijan trip from Israel with visa and registration checks, dated flight information, local-time planning and seasonal route choices.
An Azerbaijan trip from Israel needs a clear arrival plan: visa checks, registration for longer stays, date-specific flights and pickups in Baku local time. Use this guide alongside the official application portals and your confirmed itinerary.
The visa, in the order you will actually meet it
Israeli citizens are listed as eligible for an Azerbaijan e-visa. Check the official portal for the passport and trip being booked.
- E-visa, applied for at evisa.gov.az
- USD 29 standard application total: USD 20 state fee plus USD 9 service fee, published by the official ASAN portal, checked 28 September 2026. Check the urgent fee before paying.
- 30 days' stay, inside 90 days' validity
- Three working days standard, three hours urgent
- Your passport must remain valid three months past the e-visa's expiry
The official portal states three hours for urgent processing, including holidays and non-working days. Confirm eligibility and the application outcome before committing to a last-minute itinerary.
Check passport validity against the e-visa expiry date, not just the travel date.
Registration for a stay longer than fifteen days
A stay of more than fifteen days requires registration with the State Migration Service.
The State Migration Service publishes the requirement and the submission deadline: within 15 days of arrival for a stay longer than 15 days. Confirm with the accommodation who submits it and keep the confirmation.
Check the total stay length for an extended family trip, study visit or heritage programme. The registration threshold applies to the stay, not to the number of sightseeing days.
If your trip is sixteen days or longer, agree who files the registration and by when before arrival.
The route, as it flies
Tel Aviv (TLV) to Baku (GYD): about 3 hours 10 minutes over roughly 1,657 km.
Azerbaijan Airlines flies it daily, two to three times a day. Arkia flies it three times a week, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. That was about 21 weekly nonstops as at 22 August 2026, slightly below the roughly 24 we recorded in May and well above the 14 of February.
These frequencies are an August 2026 snapshot, not a current flight availability promise. Check the airline schedule for the travel dates before booking.
Two clocks, and why they drift
Azerbaijan cancelled daylight saving on 17 March 2016 and has been on UTC+4 year-round ever since. Israel still moves its clocks.
So:
- Israeli summer: Baku is one hour ahead
- Israeli winter: Baku is two hours ahead
The offset changes with Israel’s clock changes. Confirm it for the actual travel dates, and write flight arrivals and airport pickups in Baku local time.
It matters more than a normal time difference for two reasons specific to this trip. Shabbat times cannot be carried from home: Baku's Friday sunset runs from about the same as Tel Aviv's around Sukkot to roughly 37 minutes later in mid-December and close to an hour later in the second half of March. The full table is in the kosher and Shabbat guide.
Confirm office hours, public holidays and the trip contact with the suppliers involved. A national working-week convention does not establish BIRTOUR’s office hours or the support arrangements for a particular trip.
Which month, for which trip
Baku alone works all year. It is a coastal city at sea level; the winter is grey and windy rather than severe, and the museums and synagogues run regardless.
Anything that goes north has a season. Quba sits at 600 metres, with January lows around -3°C and July highs around 30°C. The M1 drive lengthens in winter and the mountain roads behind the town become a different proposition.
Krasnaya Sloboda has a sharper season than the weather does. Roughly 500 residents through the winter, over 3,000 in summer as families return from Moscow and Israel. A July visit has a community in it. A January visit has buildings. Both are real; only one is what most people picture.
So: April to June and September to October for the heritage route. May to early October if the point is the community rather than the architecture.
The Israeli calendar against all that
| Window | Dates (5787) | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Sukkot, through Simchat Torah | 25 Sep – 3 Oct 2026 | Best weather of the year for the northern route. Book kosher catering early |
| Hanukkah | 4 – 12 Dec 2026 | Works, but Baku-weighted. Krasnaya Sloboda is at its winter low |
| Pesach, Chol HaMoed | 21 – 28 Apr 2027 | Good weather, town filling back up, heaviest kosher demand of the year |
| Summer holidays | Jul – Aug 2027 | Quba is cooler than Baku, which is why Azerbaijanis go there too. Town is full |
For holiday travel, check flights, hotels and kosher catering together. Confirm the requested menus, observance arrangements and availability for your exact dates; lead times depend on the service and group size.
What this does not cover
Prices, because they move. Insurance, because it depends on your policy. And the specifically observant side of the trip, which is a whole layer of its own and lives in the kosher and Shabbat guide.
If the trip has a heritage spine rather than a city-break one, the five-day shape is where the days go.
- Do Israelis need a visa for Azerbaijan?
- Israeli citizens appear on the official e-visa eligibility list. On 28 September 2026, ASAN published a USD 20 state fee plus USD 9 service fee, totalling USD 29 for the standard application. It states three working days for standard processing and three hours for urgent processing; check the urgent fee before paying. A single entry allows up to 30 days of stay. The passport must remain valid at least three months beyond the e-visa expiry. Approval and admission remain decisions of the authorities.
- What is the fifteen-day registration rule?
- The State Migration Service requires registration for Israeli visitors staying more than 15 days, with submission within 15 days of arrival. Confirm who submits it for your accommodation and keep the registration confirmation. Check the official guidance if your accommodation changes.
- How long is the flight from Tel Aviv to Baku?
- About three hours and ten minutes over roughly 1,657 km. Azerbaijan Airlines flies it daily, two to three times a day, and Arkia three times a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, which totalled around 21 weekly nonstops as at 22 August 2026, against roughly 24 in May and 14 in February. Check the operating airline and departure date before booking.
- What is the time difference between Israel and Azerbaijan?
- Baku is one hour ahead during Israeli summer time and two hours ahead during Israeli winter time. Confirm the offset for your travel dates and record airport pickups in Baku local time.
- When is the best time to visit Azerbaijan from Israel?
- April to June and September to October for anything that goes north. Baku alone works year-round. If the trip includes Krasnaya Sloboda and you want a community around you rather than a set of buildings, the window is May to early October, because the town holds roughly 500 residents through the winter and over 3,000 in summer.
- Is Sukkot or Pesach a good week to travel?
- Both can suit an Azerbaijan trip. For kosher catering and holiday observance, confirm menus, arrangements and availability for the exact dates before booking. Lead times depend on the requested service and group size; there is no universal two-week booking rule.
- Do Israeli and Azerbaijani offices work the same days?
- Working days and holiday calendars can differ between countries and individual suppliers. Confirm office hours, your trip contact and support arrangements in the proposal rather than assuming that every Baku office is closed on Sunday.
