Best Naftalan Sanatoriums Compared: Chinar, Garabag, Gashalti and the Rest (2026)

listicle · 18 min read

By Emin Abdulalimov

A named-property comparison of the Naftalan sanatoriums trading in Azerbaijan in 2026: which hold an official star category, published room counts, who owns them, rack rates, treatment focus, and how each is actually reached from Baku.

Fourteen sanatoriums operate in the town of Naftalan, Azerbaijan, as of July 2026, priced from AZN 139 to 183 a night at the four best-documented properties: Nafta Sanatorium, Gashalti Health Hotel Naftalan, Chinar Hotel Naftalan, and Garabagh Resort & SPA. The right pick depends on budget, treatment focus, and whether you want a resort feel or a plainer clinical stay.

Birtour is a Baku-based DMC that books stays at these sanatoriums; we do not operate any of the properties named on this page and we are not a medical provider. We book the stay and handle the ground, and the clinical decision is between the guest and their own physician. Nothing here is medical advice. Suitability, contraindications, and outcomes are set by each venue's clinical team, not by us; screen with a physician before booking a course. Rates below are each property's own public listing, indicative and dated, not Birtour's net rate; ask us for a current quote.

Last reviewed: August 2026.

Why we compare Naftalan properties on facilities, not outcomes

Because outcomes are not ours to compare. Every property in Naftalan sells the same base therapy, and none of them publishes trial data that would let anyone rank them clinically. What can be checked is the checkable: star category, published room counts, ownership, tariff structure, and how far the front door sits from an airport or a station.

That is a narrower page than most Naftalan comparisons you will read, and deliberately so. When an operator asks us which sanatorium is better, the honest answer is that we can tell them which one has 78 rooms and a state 4-star neighbour on the same street, and which one has no crawlable website and a star rating that exists only on a booking agent's card. The clinical question goes to a physician.

We re-checked the facility side of this page against the State Tourism Agency's own star register, the trade union confederation's sanatorium list, and each property's own site on 11 August 2026. Three things changed as a result, and they are all in the next section.

Which Naftalan sanatoriums are actually trading in 2026?

Two booking agents were still listing fourteen trading Naftalan properties in August 2026, and a second agent listed three more beyond that set, so the count you see depends on whose inventory you are reading. The state's own register is stricter: seven Naftalan hotels hold an official star category, and the rest of the town does not appear on it at all.

That gap matters commercially, because star classification in Azerbaijan is not a marketing choice. Under Article 9.1 of the Law on Tourism a hotel must obtain a star category within six months of starting operations, and operating without one carries a 2,000 to 5,000 AZN fine under the Code of Administrative Offences. The classification is run by the Certification Body for Hotel Star Categories under the State Tourism Agency, against criteria the agency's Collegium re-approved on 25 May 2026. Auditors make secret reservations and read guest reviews before the site visit.

Absence from that register is not automatically a red flag. The register covers hotels, and a property trading as a sanatorium rather than a hotel sits outside it, which is equally true of every union sanatorium in Baku and on the Absheron peninsula. What absence does mean is that no star rating on that property's agent listing has been certified by anybody.

Three corrections come out of that table, and we would rather print them than quietly restate last month's page. Gashalti carries an official 3 stars, not the 4 its own marketing states or the 5 two booking agents advertise. Nafta Sanatorium describes itself as a "prestigious 4-star hotel" and does not appear on the register at all. And the 173-room figure that circulates for Gashalti comes from aggregators; the property serves no crawlable room data of its own.

On ownership, only one property in the town is settled. "Kurort Naftalan" Health Center on Heydar Aliyev Avenue belongs to Kurort CJSC of the Azerbaijan Trade Unions Confederation, publishes 26 rooms and 50 beds, and runs a treatment base covering musculoskeletal and dermatological conditions. Its rooms are listed at 180 AZN for an 18 m² economy single, 180 to 220 for a 26 m² standard and 200 to 240 for a 40 m² senior suite. Bookings route through the confederation's own voucher system rather than the commercial agents. For the other thirteen or more trading properties we found no register of operators, so treat any state-run claim about them as unconfirmed.

Which naftalan sanatorium is best?

The honest answer is that "best" depends on what you are booking for. Chinar Hotel Naftalan is the most established all-inclusive option; Garabagh Resort & SPA suits travelers who want a resort feel alongside the treatment course; Gashalti Health Hotel Naftalan carries the widest published treatment menu; and Nafta Sanatorium is the one that markets itself specifically around psoriasis and joint pain.

None of this replaces your own physician's screening or the venue's clinical assessment on arrival. Treat the table as a starting shortlist, not a diagnosis.

Chinar vs Garabag vs Gashalti: what's the difference?

Chinar Hotel Naftalan, Garabagh Resort & SPA, and Gashalti Health Hotel Naftalan are the three most frequently booked Naftalan properties, and the AZN 43-per-night spread between them tracks positioning more than treatment quality.

PropertyFrom (AZN/night, July 2026)Official categoryPositioningTreatment focusBest fit
Chinar Hotel Naftalan1554 starsFlagship; all-inclusive 7+ night packagesStandard naftalan bath course with UVA/UVB, full board bundledFirst-time bookers who want an established, extensively reviewed package

Gashalti Health Hotel Naftalan1403 starsBalances treatment and leisureReported as the only Naftalan property offering CO2 injections alongside the naftalan bath and UVBPatients wanting a wider treatment menu than the standard course

Garabagh's premium over Chinar buys more resort-style leisure, not a documented difference in the bath treatment itself. Gashalti's CO2 injections are the one clinical difference among these three, and that is a property-specific offering to confirm directly, not evidence that CO2 injections outperform the standard course.

Worth noticing on the register: Chinar and Garabagh share an address, Shirvan avenue 12, and Gashalti sits at number 37 on the same street. The three "different" resorts are a five-minute walk apart. If a client is choosing between them on setting rather than on facilities, there is less to choose than the brochures suggest.

How much do naftalan sanatoriums cost?

Public rack rates on the naftalanhotels.com listings range from a confirmed AZN 45 a night at Sehirli Naftalan Sanatorium up to AZN 183 at Garabagh Resort & SPA, as of July 2026. These are retail, direct-booking figures, not Birtour's net rate; expect group and repeat-booking pricing to differ.

Two properties do print their own numbers, and those are the most useful figures on this page because nobody is reselling them. Gold & Spa Naftalan publishes nightly room rates inclusive of three meals: 125 AZN for a standard single, 195 for a standard double, 194 for a suite single, 306 for a superior triple, 356 for a superior quad. It also prices procedures individually, which no other property in the town does publicly: a full-body naftalan bath at 15 AZN, a sitting bath at 10, a foot or hand bath at 8, electrotherapy and laser therapy at 6 each. Karvan Hotel-Sanatorium publishes five room categories from 55 to 80 AZN per person per night with full board included, which is the lowest full-board figure any Naftalan property states on its own site.

Set those against the union property and the town's real price ladder appears. "Kurort Naftalan" opens at 180 AZN, above Chinar and just under Garabagh, for a union-owned 26-room house. Price in Naftalan is not tracking star category, room count or facilities in any consistent way, which is the single best argument for getting a live quote rather than reading a table.

Two figures in the aggregator table above do not match their own property listing, and we are stating both rather than picking one silently. Nafta Sanatorium's own property page and the aggregator's homepage card disagree on the headline rate. Sehirli's homepage listing shows a AZN 0 nightly rate, which reads as an offer but is a pricing-feed bug on the aggregator's side; the property's own page prices a Standard Package from AZN 45 a night. Neither is a typo to shrug off; check the live number before you quote a client.

Which naftalan hotel suits psoriasis?

Nafta Sanatorium is the property that markets itself specifically around psoriasis and rheumatic conditions, and it is rated 9.2 on Booking.com. Gashalti Health Hotel Naftalan is reported as the only Naftalan property offering CO2 injections alongside the standard naftalan bath and UVB course, which is relevant if a physician has recommended a broader protocol than the bath alone.

Neither listing is a medical recommendation, and property marketing is not clinical evidence. Naftalan oil is traditionally used for psoriasis during remission, never during an active flare, and a small observational study reported skin improvement, not a cure. For the underlying evidence, including what the one existing randomized trial actually tested (it was oral lichen planus, not psoriasis), see our naftalan oil therapy explainer and our naftalan for psoriasis guide. This page is about choosing a property, not about the evidence behind the therapy itself.

How do you actually reach these properties from Baku?

By road, and there is no direct coach. Sun City Naftalan publishes 340 km to Heydar Aliyev International Airport, 50 km to Ganja airport and 20 km to Goran railway station. Baku's international bus terminal lists no Naftalan service at all, so every arrival routes through Ganja or Goran and finishes on a private transfer. Plan four and a half to five and a half hours from Baku.

One access fact did change in 2026 and it is worth knowing even though it is not aimed at Naftalan. Azerbaijan Railways opened the first regular daily Ganja to Gabala passenger service on 12 January 2026, 139 km in 1 hour 50 minutes, fares from AZN 4.30, with Goran among the intermediate stops. For a client combining Naftalan with Gabala in one trip, that line removes a long road leg between the two.

LegDistancePublished fare or note
Baku to Ganja, coach360 kmAZN 13.10 to 13.50, roughly half-hourly through the afternoon and evening. The terminal prints a journey time for this route that is not physically plausible, so ignore it and budget five hours
Ganja to Naftalan, road50 kmPrivate transfer; no scheduled service we could confirm
Goran station to Naftalan, road20 kmPrivate transfer; Goran sits on both the Baku main line and the new Ganja to Gabala service
Baku to Naftalan, private car340 km by the properties' own figureFour and a half to five and a half hours depending on traffic out of Baku

Air is the weak link. On 11 and 12 August 2026 the Heydar Aliyev departures board listed Nakhchivan as the only domestic destination on either day, with no Ganja, Gabala or Lankaran departures at all. A two-day sample is not proof a route has been withdrawn, but it is enough that we build Naftalan itineraries around a road transfer and treat a Ganja flight as an upgrade if it materialises. Anyone quoting a Baku to Ganja schedule of Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 11:05 for 56 manat is quoting a January 2017 article. Our Baku to Naftalan and Gabala access guide carries the route detail and the visa steps.

What to know before booking a naftalan sanatorium?

Most Naftalan sanatoriums sell courses in 7, 10, or 14-day blocks, with 14 days standard at most properties; a shorter stay is usually possible but is not how the properties price their packages. Karvan states its own course lengths as 7, 10, 14 or 21 days, set with its doctors, and that no naftalan bath begins without a prior medical consultation and an individually designed programme. Sun City's free-night offers are built at eight and thirteen nights.

Screen with a physician before you book, not after you arrive. Naftalan therapy is contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation, allergy to petroleum products, active cancer, acute febrile infection, stage 2 to 3 hypertension or severe cardiac disease, and bleeding disorders; psoriasis is indicated only during remission, not during a flare. Our naftalan safety and duration FAQ covers the full contraindication list and course lengths in more depth, and our naftalan for arthritis and joint pain guide sets out what the evidence does and does not support.

On paperwork, no Azerbaijani state portal or Naftalan property we checked in August 2026 lists a doctor's referral, medical certificate, vaccination record or health insurance as a condition of booking or entry. That is a booking rule and nothing more; it is not a reason to skip the physician. Entry is on a visa or e-visa, applied for at least three working days ahead, with a passport valid at least three months beyond the e-visa's expiry.

The "from" rates in the tables above are each property's own public listing, not a net B2B rate and not a single all-in medical price; Naftalan properties bundle room and treatment differently, and two listings for the same property can disagree, as shown above for Nafta and Sehirli. Confirm the current figure before you quote a client.

What we would not recommend

  • Selling a star rating you read on a booking agent's page. Agents list Gashalti, Gold, Garabagh and Chinar at 5 stars. The state register carries two of those at 3 and two at 4. If the rating is going into a client-facing document, take it from the register.
  • Booking Chinar, Garabagh and Gashalti as three different destinations. They sit on the same street, two of them at the same address. Choose on room and tariff, not on imagined distance.
  • Building the arrival around a domestic flight. Baku's departures board showed one domestic destination in August 2026, and it was not Ganja. Price the road transfer as the plan and the flight as the bonus.
  • Quoting the AZN 0 line on the aggregator's Sehirli card. It is a broken price feed, we have watched a client be quoted from it, and the property's own page opens at 45.
  • Selling a five-night stay as a course. Every property that publishes course lengths starts at seven days. A shorter booking is a hotel stay with a few procedures attached, and it should be sold as one.
  • Repeating visitor numbers from the city administration's page. The figures there are 2018 and 2019 vintage. There is no current published visitor count for Naftalan and we have stopped quoting one.

For operators building a Caucasus wellness programme and weighing properties on rooms, tariff structure and transfer time, our Baku to Naftalan and Gabala access guide covers the route and the visa steps. Frequently asked
Which Naftalan sanatorium is best?
There is no single best Naftalan sanatorium; the right pick depends on budget and treatment focus. Chinar Hotel Naftalan is the most established all-inclusive option (from AZN 155/night), Garabagh Resort & SPA leans toward resort leisure (from AZN 183/night), and Nafta Sanatorium focuses on psoriasis and joint pain (from AZN 139/night).
Chinar vs Garabag vs Gashalti: what's the difference?
Chinar Hotel Naftalan (from AZN 155/night) is the flagship all-inclusive package. Garabagh Resort & SPA (from AZN 183/night) leans toward resort leisure alongside treatment. Gashalti Health Hotel Naftalan (from AZN 140/night) is reported as the only property offering CO2 injections alongside the standard naftalan bath course, at a lower price than Chinar.
How much do Naftalan sanatoriums cost?
2026 rack rates run roughly AZN 139 to 183 per night at the four best-documented properties: Nafta from AZN 139, Gashalti from AZN 140, Chinar from AZN 155, and Garabagh from AZN 183. Most of the other ten properties in the cluster do not publish a headline nightly rate; treat those as on-request until you get a direct quote.
Which Naftalan hotel suits psoriasis?
Nafta Sanatorium markets itself specifically around psoriasis and rheumatic conditions. Gashalti Health Hotel Naftalan is reported as the only property in the cluster offering CO2 injections alongside the standard bath and UVB course. Neither substitutes for a physician's screening: psoriasis is an indication only during remission, never during an active flare.
What should I know before booking a Naftalan sanatorium?
Confirm the minimum stay: most courses run 7 to 14 nights. Screen with a physician first, since naftalan therapy is contraindicated in pregnancy, active cancer, severe cardiac disease, and during a psoriasis flare. Public 'from' rates are indicative and change; Birtour is a booking DMC, not the operator or a medical provider, and can get you a current quote.
Which Naftalan hotels hold an official star rating?
Seven, on the State Tourism Agency's register as of August 2026: Chinar Hotel & Spa Naftalan and Garabagh Resort & Spa at 4 stars, Gashalti Health Hotel, Gold & Spa Naftalan and Sun City Naftalan at 3 stars, and Nur Naftalan and Park Naftalan Health Hotel at 2 stars. Nafta, Karvan, Kepez, Gozel, Sehirli and Naftalan Central do not appear. The register classifies hotels, and several Naftalan properties trade as sanatoria.
Are Naftalan sanatoriums state-run or private?
Mostly unverifiable, with one confirmed exception. 'Kurort Naftalan' Health Center on Heydar Aliyev Avenue belongs to Kurort CJSC of the Azerbaijan Trade Unions Confederation and publishes 26 rooms and 50 beds. No public register of operators exists for the other properties in the town, so treat any claim that a given Naftalan sanatorium is state-run as unconfirmed.
How many rooms do Naftalan sanatoriums have?
Only three publish a count. Nafta Sanatorium states 78 rooms in three categories, Sun City Naftalan states 94, and 'Kurort Naftalan' Health Center states 26 rooms and 50 beds. Chinar, Garabagh and Gashalti serve no crawlable room data, so figures circulating for them come from aggregators rather than the properties themselves.
