How to Get to Naftalan and Chenot Gabala from Baku (2026)

Naftalan and Chenot Palace Gabala sit in opposite corners of western Azerbaijan, and almost every international traveler reaches both through Baku. Chenot Palace Gabala is about 220 km, roughly 4.5 hours by road, from Heydar Aliyev International Airport, according to the property's own FAQ. Naftalan sits farther out, at 340 km from the same airport by the hotels' own published figures, with Ganja International Airport as a nearer alternate hub for either destination. Since January 2026 there is also a train.

Why the route to Naftalan and Gabala changed in January 2026

Rail. On 12 January 2026 Azerbaijan Railways launched the first regular daily Ganja to Gabala passenger service, 139 km in one hour fifty, from 4.30 AZN. It also opens a same-day Baku to Gabala run by connection at Laki, and it puts Goran station, 20 km from Naftalan, on a scheduled line.

This is the first genuinely new access route into the western wellness cluster in years, and most published guidance has not caught up with it. The service departs Ganja at 10:10 and Gabala at 18:00, stops at Goran, Yevlakh, Laki and Agdash, and sells Standard, Standard+, Business and First Class seats. Laki to Gabala alone is 1.70 AZN. Tickets go through ADY's own website and mobile app.

We are not going to oversell it. A guest arriving from Riyadh with three suitcases and a 07:00 landing is still going into a car. But for a companion joining mid-course, for a return leg where nobody is watching the clock, or for a client who actively wants the train, it now exists, and at 4.30 AZN it is not a rounding error against a private transfer.

How do you get to Naftalan from Baku?

By road, or by rail to Goran and a short car leg. Naftalan hotels publish 340 km from Heydar Aliyev International Airport, 50 km from Ganja airport, and 20 km from Goran railway station. No coach runs to Naftalan itself; the state bus terminal serves Ganja at 13.10 to 13.50 AZN.

We previously gave the Baku distance as about 330 km. The properties themselves publish 340, and their own figure is the one worth carrying, since it is the number their front desks quote when a driver calls ahead.

Goran is the piece most itineraries miss. It is a stop on both the Baku main line and the new Ganja to Gabala service, which makes a rail arrival into the Naftalan area genuinely practical for the first time, with a 20 km car leg at the end. Ask us to price it against a full private transfer before you assume the car wins.

A charter option also exists for travelers already in Central Asia. FLYONE Asia launched a weekly flight between Tashkent and Ganja International Airport in 2026, landing Sundays, alongside a separate weekly Tashkent to Baku service on a different day. It is not the practical route for most Gulf, Indian, or European guests, who still connect through Baku.

How do you get to Chenot Palace Gabala?

Chenot Palace Gabala sits in Nohurgishlag, about 30 km from Gabala International Airport (GBB), 170 km from Ganja International Airport, and 220 km, roughly 4.5 hours by road, from Baku's Heydar Aliyev International Airport, according to the property's own FAQ. The resort routes road arrivals along the M4 through Shamakhi and asks that transfers be requested in advance.

Three of Chenot's own rules shape the ground plan and catch planners out, so they belong on a logistics page rather than a price page. Access is granted only to guests following a programme, so day use is not available and a non-programme companion cannot stay. The minimum is seven nights, bookable up to fourteen, and the programme has to be chosen before arrival. Transfers must be requested in advance through the "Request Transfer" link in the booking confirmation, which means a guest who lands expecting to sort a car at the airport has already made a mistake. Check-in is from 15:00 and check-out at 14:00, and the arrival day carries no treatments beyond the evening meal, so a late landing costs less than it looks.

The working language on site is Azerbaijani, with English, Russian and Turkish also spoken; translation for consultations can be arranged at extra cost. Worth raising early for a Gulf family travelling with an Arabic-only member.

Can you fly to Ganja or Gabala from Baku?

Not on the days we checked. On 11 and 12 August 2026 the Heydar Aliyev departures board listed Nakhchivan as the only domestic destination, with no Ganja, Gabala, Lankaran, Fuzuli or Zangilan services on either date. Two days is a sample, not a cancellation notice, so confirm with the carrier before you plan around one.

There is a specific piece of misinformation to kill here, because we have now seen it in two supplier itineraries this year. A schedule circulates online reading "Baku to Ganja Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 11:05, 56 manat; Baku to Gabala Friday and Sunday at 16:30, 48 manat". It traces back to an airline news article from January 2017. It is nine years old. Anyone presenting it as a 2026 timetable has copied it without checking, and a client who books a ground programme around it will be standing in the wrong terminal.

Gabala International Airport is real, sits 30 km from Chenot, and per the resort "operates during the season and is also available for private flights". Note that this is the resort's wording, not the airport's, and no season dates are published anywhere we could reach. Treat GBB as a private-aviation and charter option rather than a scheduled connection, unless you have a live booking to show us.

Do you need a visa to visit a Naftalan sanatorium?

It depends on your passport, and for several markets the answer changed in 2026. Azerbaijan's ASAN e-Visa system lists medical treatment as a purpose of visit separate from tourism. Saudi, Omani, Bahraini and Kuwaiti ordinary passports have been visa-free since 15 February 2026, on a window that expires in 2027.

The standard e-Visa fee is USD 29 total, a USD 20 state fee plus a USD 9 service fee, issued within 3 working days. An urgent option is issued in about 3 hours, regardless of holidays and non-working days. These figures are current as of 20 July 2026, verified directly on evisa.gov.az; government fees can change, so check the live page before you book flights.

Those four unilateral windows are the commercially important row, and the expiry dates are the part everyone drops. They are one-year trials of three entries at up to 30 days each. Quote them to a client without the end date attached and you will strand somebody on entry four, or in February 2027. Country-by-country detail sits in our GCC entry-rules guide.

Two more entry rules matter specifically for treatment stays. Azerbaijan's land borders are closed to inbound passenger traffic to at least 1 October 2026, so nobody drives in from Georgia, Russia or Iran; though a guest who flew in may exit overland by road without permission, which makes a one-way Baku to Tbilisi exit after a course a legitimate shape. And stays longer than 15 days require registration with the State Migration Service. Hotels normally file it for their guests, and both Chenot and the Naftalan properties are hotels, so in practice it happens at check-in. It is worth knowing which side of the line your course falls on: a 21-day Naftalan programme crosses it, a 14-night Chenot stay sits just under.

What is the best time to visit Naftalan?

Treatment courses run indoors, so therapy is not weather-dependent. What moves by season is the transfer. Gabala's ski season at Tufandag ran from 15 December 2025 last winter and typically closes in late March or early April; the 2026/27 opening date has not been announced. Baku's Formula 1 week runs 24 to 26 September 2026.

Build a buffer into a winter transfer to Chenot Palace Gabala for the snow, even though the resort itself operates year-round. In Baku, race week pushes up airport arrivals and city traffic on the days around it, and a transfer timed just before or after tends to run smoother than one during.

The other timing question is the course itself, which sets the shape of the trip more than the weather does. Chenot runs a minimum of seven nights and takes bookings up to fourteen. Karvan in Naftalan states course lengths of 7, 10, 14 or 21 days. Sun City Naftalan advertises free-night offers of 6+2 and 10+3, which are eight and thirteen-night stays in practice. Pick the course length first, then the dates, then the flights. We have watched too many families do it in the opposite order and lose a week.

How long is the transfer?

Two published figures disagree, and we plan against the longer one. Chenot Palace Gabala's own FAQ states about 4.5 hours by road from Baku. Baku International Bus Terminal prints its 214 km Gabala coach at three hours. We treat the terminal's journey times as unreliable, so 4.5 hours is our planning number.

That is not a cheap shot at the terminal. Its own route board prints the 360 km Baku to Ganja run at "2 hour 5 minute", which is not physically possible on that road. The distances and the fares from that source look sound and we use them. The times do not, and we do not.

Naftalan's transfer is longer and less precisely documented: we estimate four and a half to five and a half hours by road, depending on traffic through Yevlakh and Ganja, and we present that as a planning estimate rather than a confirmed figure. Confirm current timing with us before you lock a tight arrival window, particularly if a treatment course starts the same day you land.

If you are self-driving, note that fuel moved on 1 January 2026: AI-92 went from 1.10 to 1.15 AZN a litre and diesel from 1.00 to 1.10, funding a new 7 qapik per litre road tax. AI-95 runs 1.60 and AI-98 2.30. Self-drive SUV hire in Baku starts around 57 AZN a day. Diesel took the bigger increase, which is the grade most touring minibuses run on, so a transfer rate costed against 2025 fuel is now light.

What we wouldn't recommend

Almost everything that goes wrong on this route goes wrong before anyone gets in a car. These are the five we push back on hardest.

• Quoting a shortened Baku to Gabala drive time. The Mughanli to Ismayilli to Gabala highway section will cut 8.8 km off the route when it opens, across 85.6 km of new road with 17 bridges and an 885 metre tunnel. Its last confirmed status is 70% complete, in May 2025. Anyone quoting the faster time is quoting a road that has not opened.
• Building a programme on a domestic flight to Ganja or Gabala. We saw no such departure on the board on either day we checked, and the schedule circulating online is from 2017.
• Trusting a published coach journey time. Use the terminal's distances and fares. Ignore its clock.
• Planning a coach into Naftalan. There isn't one. Naftalan is reached through Ganja, roughly 50 km, or Goran station, roughly 20 km.
• Sending a companion to Chenot without a programme. Access is limited to programme guests, day use is not available, and a non-programme partner will not be admitted. Book them into Gabala town instead and we will run the shuttle.

What we arrange, and what we don't

• We arrange the airport pickup and the road, rail or connecting-flight transfer. Tell us your dates and which sanatorium or programme you are booking, and we build the transfer around your flight.
• We don't run the sanatoriums or Chenot's clinical program. Admission, treatment plans, and any medical screening are set by each venue's own clinical team.
• We don't quote a single transfer time as guaranteed. The distances above are sourced; the hours depend on traffic, season, and airport processing, so we confirm the specific window once we have your dates.
• We don't sell the train as the default. It is real, it is new, and for some legs it is the better call. For a first arrival with luggage and a same-day admission, it is not.
