Naftalan for Psoriasis: How It Works, Remission Evidence, and When Not to Go (2026)

Naftalan oil is traditionally used for psoriasis during the remission stage at sanatoriums in Naftalan, Azerbaijan. A small observational study reported PASI improving from about 23.1 to 7.95 after three weeks of warm-oil immersion, a reported outcome from uncontrolled clinical experience, not a cure and not a randomized trial. Naftalan is contraindicated during an active flare.

Why this guide leads with the contraindications

Because the fastest way to waste a trip to Naftalan is to book it during a flare. Naftalan is indicated only in the stationary or remission stage of psoriasis, so the staging question settles the booking before price, property or course length matter at all. We put it first for that reason, not for caution's sake.

The part of this trip we handle is the Baku end: the airport pickup, the 340 km road leg, the property booking, the return. The part that decides whether the trip is worth taking at all is not ours, which is why this page reads more like a screening checklist than a sales page. Every price, room count and course length below is sourced to a named party and dated. Where two sources disagree, we say so instead of quoting the flattering one.

Does naftalan cure psoriasis?

No. No study has shown naftalan cures psoriasis. The reported outcome comes from one small single-arm Croatian study: PASI (Psoriasis Area and Severity Index) improved from about 23.1 to 7.95 after three weeks of daily immersion. That is uncontrolled clinical evidence, not a randomized controlled trial, and it describes improvement, not a lasting cure.

Naftalan does have one double-blind randomized controlled trial to its name, but it treated oral lichen planus and recurrent aphthous stomatitis, not psoriasis or joint disease. That trial found no significant efficacy difference against the steroid betamethasone. Any claim that an RCT proves naftalan clears psoriasis is citing the wrong trial.

Naftalan oil psoriasis: what the evidence actually supports

Evidence-supported use of naftalan oil for psoriasis sits in one bracket: remission-stage disease, not active flares, supported by uncontrolled clinical experience built up over decades at Naftalan plus the single small study cited above. There is no controlled trial comparing naftalan against a placebo or an established psoriasis treatment such as topical corticosteroids or phototherapy alone.

The proposed mechanism draws on in-vitro keratinocyte studies and the oil's naphthenic-acid and cycloalkane content, not a confirmed clinical pathway. Sanatorium staff at Naftalan will sometimes describe the mechanism in firmer terms than the literature supports; treat mechanism explanations from any resort as a working theory, not settled science. Naftalan's own presidential-backed status as Azerbaijan's flagship medical-tourism brand (a September 2024 decree specifically targets its medical-tourism role) reflects a government growth push, not a research upgrade in the underlying evidence base.

Nor is the substance unique to Azerbaijan, whatever the town's marketing says. A refined, distilled derivative of the same oil is used at a hospital in Ivanić-Grad, Croatia, and Dead Sea climatotherapy is a separate treatment with its own literature. How long is a naftalan psoriasis course?

A naftalan psoriasis course typically runs 14 days, the standard length at most Naftalan sanatoriums, though 7 and 10-day blocks also exist. Each day usually combines an 8 to 15-minute warm-oil immersion bath at 34 to 38°C with 15 to 20 minutes of UVA or UVB light and a physiotherapy session, sold as part of a full-board package.

Two properties publish their own figures rather than an industry range, which is worth more than a third-party average. Karvan Hotel-Sanatorium states that its Naftalan bath is held at 37°C, that "each session lasts exactly 10 minutes", that course length of 7, 10, 14 or 21 days is set with its own doctors, and that no session begins without a prior on-site medical consultation. Sun City Naftalan sells stay length rather than course length, advertising a 6+2 and a 10+3 free-night structure, which land a guest on 8 and 13-night stays respectively.

Minimum child age for a psoriasis course varies by source, three years in some references and five in others; we state it conservatively and recommend confirming the specific sanatorium's policy for children under five before booking. None of the day-count or age figures above substitute for the venue's own clinical intake assessment.

When is naftalan not safe for psoriasis?

Psoriasis staging matters more than any other factor in whether naftalan is appropriate. Naftalan is indicated only in the stationary or remission stage of psoriasis and contraindicated during the acute, progressive flare phase. Booking a course while a flare is active is not a faster route to relief; it is the specific scenario the therapy is not indicated for.

Beyond psoriasis staging, the full contraindication list applies to every naftalan booking regardless of the condition being treated:

• Active psoriasis flare. Indicated only during the stationary/remission stage; the acute, progressive phase is a contraindication, not an indication.
• Petroleum allergy. Naftalan oil is a petroleum derivative; a known allergy to petroleum products rules it out.
• Pregnancy and lactation. Excluded across every source we checked, with no exception noted.
• Active cancer or tumors. Listed as a contraindication in the dermatology literature.
• Acute febrile infection. Wait for the infection to clear before booking a course.
• Stage 2 to 3 hypertension or severe cardiac disease. Warm immersion raises cardiovascular load; screen with a cardiologist first.
• Bleeding disorders. A prudent additional caution for hot immersion bathing; confirm with a physician.

A separate safety gap applies to the oil itself, not just the patient's condition. A 1978 University of Zagreb trial on 770 patients found refined "white" naftalan was not carcinogenic, but most Azerbaijani resorts use crude-oil immersion baths, which that study does not cover. Naphthalene, a distinct chemical compound, is separately classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as Group 2B, "possibly carcinogenic to humans"; naftalan oil is a different substance, and the two get confused in casual write-ups. Naftalan oil also has not received full international medical certification as of mid-2026; treat any claim that it is internationally regulator-approved as premature.

Screen with a physician before booking, not after arrival, and disclose your psoriasis stage honestly when you enquire. A sanatorium's clinical team makes the final call on suitability once you arrive, and an accurate stage disclosure at booking avoids a wasted trip.

Three questions are worth putting to your own dermatologist rather than to a property's booking desk, before any deposit moves: whether your current staging reads as stationary or progressive, whether anything in your current treatment changes that answer, and whether a cardiologist is comfortable with daily warm immersion if you have any cardiac history. None of those are questions we can answer, and none of them get easier once a non-refundable booking exists. What is the best sanatorium in Azerbaijan for psoriasis?

We do not rank sanatoriums; the venue's clinical team decides suitability once you arrive, and we have not audited outcomes across properties ourselves. What we can state is positioning, pricing sourced to each property's own listing, and the star category the Azerbaijani state register actually carries, which is often not the one an aggregator advertises.

Star ratings in this town need a second source, and there is one. The Azerbaijan Tourism Board runs the state register of star-classified hotels, and classification is compulsory: under Article 9.1 of the Law on Tourism a hotel must obtain a category within six months of opening. Seven Naftalan properties held one as of 11 August 2026. Chinar Hotel & Spa Naftalan and Garabagh Resort & Spa are listed at 4 stars. Gashaltı Health Hotel Naftalan, Gold & Spa Naftalan and Sun City Naftalan are listed at 3. Nur Naftalan and Park Naftalan Health Hotel are listed at 2. Nafta Sanatorium, Karvan, Kepez, Gozel Naftalan and the town's other sanatoria do not appear on it at all, which is what the register looks like for a property classified as a sanatorium rather than a hotel; the Absheron sanatoriums near Baku are absent for the same reason. Booking agents sell the same seven properties one to two categories higher than the register carries them. Where the table above repeats a property's own or an agent's rating, the register is the authority.

Booking agents list 14 trading properties in the town as of August 2026, and a second agent adds three more names on top of that list. The four above are the most established for a dermatology-specific course; smaller properties exist but we have not verified their psoriasis-specific protocols independently. Room counts are mostly unpublished: Nafta Sanatorium states 78 rooms across three categories plus 19 treatment cabins and 10 naftalan bath zones, Sun City states 94 rooms, and the Kurort Naftalan health centre, the one property in town whose ownership we could confirm (Kurort JSC of the Azerbaijan Trade Unions Confederation), states 26 rooms and 50 beds. Chinar, Garabagh and Gashalti run JavaScript-only sites that publish no room count we could read at all.

One property publishes a per-procedure price list rather than only a bundled rate, and it is the most useful pricing document in the town for that reason. Gold Naftalan lists a full-body naftalan bath at 15 AZN, a sitting bath at 10, foot and hand baths at 8 each, and electrotherapy or laser therapy at 6, alongside room rates from 125 AZN single including three meals. Read those figures as a reference point for what the treatment component is worth inside somebody else's all-in package. How do you get to Naftalan from Baku?

By road, and there is no direct coach. Naftalan sits about 340 km from Heydar Aliyev International Airport by the hotels' own reckoning, roughly 50 km from Ganja and 20 km from Goran railway station. Most guests take a private transfer out of Baku; the two alternatives both run through Ganja or through Goran.

Baku's International Bus Terminal publishes no Naftalan route at all on its live board. What it does publish is Baku to Ganja, 360 km at 13.10 to 13.50 AZN, running roughly half-hourly through the afternoon and evening, with Naftalan a further 50 km by car from there. Take the terminal's fares and distances and ignore its journey times: the same page prints the 360 km Ganja run as "2 hour 5 minute", which is not a real number, and we would rather say that plainly than repeat it.

Rail is the genuine change this year. Azerbaijan Railways opened the first regular daily Ganja to Gabala passenger service on 12 January 2026, 139 km in 1 hour 50 minutes from 4.30 AZN, and it calls at Goran, 20 km from Naftalan. Goran also sits on the Baku main line. For a guest who would rather not spend five hours in a car, main line to Goran plus a short road transfer is now a workable shape that did not exist in 2025.

Air does not help. On 11 and 12 August 2026 the Heydar Aliyev departures board listed Nakhchivan as the only domestic destination, with no Ganja departures on either date. The "Baku to Ganja four times a week at 56 manat" schedule still circulating online traces back to a January 2017 article; do not build an arrival around it. What do you need to book a course?

A passport, an e-visa or a visa-free passport, and dates. No Azerbaijani state portal or Naftalan facility page we read lists a doctor's referral, medical certificate or insurance as a condition of booking. Clinical screening happens on arrival instead: Karvan states that no naftalan bath begins without a prior on-site medical consultation.

Two e-visa rules are worth building a calendar around, both published by the State Tourism Agency: apply at least three working days before the visit, and hold a passport valid for at least three months beyond the e-visa's expiry. The official portal is evisa.gov.az and it is the only one worth using; the third-party sites charging a markup on a state fee are not doing anything you cannot do yourself in ten minutes.

On the referral question, be careful how you read our answer. None of the state or facility pages we checked states that a referral is required, and none states that one is unnecessary either. That is an absence of a stated rule, not a rule. If your own dermatologist has written a staging note, bring it; a property's intake doctor will read it faster than they will re-derive it.

What we would not recommend

Four booking patterns we push back on, none of them clinical judgements. A trip built around a flare that has not settled. A 7-day block flown in from the Gulf or Europe. A same-day arrival into a course start. And a property chosen off an aggregator's star rating rather than the state register.

• Booking while a flare is active. The staging call is not ours to make, but operationally this is the one pattern that reliably produces a declined course and a non-refundable flight. Settle staging with your physician first, then send us dates.
• A 7-day block after a long-haul flight. Most properties default to 14 days, and the only property publishing its own menu lists 7, 10, 14 and 21. For a guest flying in from the Gulf, India or Europe, a 7-day block spends two of its days on the road at either end.
• Landing in Baku and starting the same day. Naftalan is 340 km out and we plan the road leg at four and a half to five and a half hours. When the flight lands after mid-afternoon we build in a Baku overnight rather than arrive at a sanatorium reception at 23:00.
• Picking a property off a star rating. Marketed ratings in Naftalan run one to two categories above the state register. Compare on what a property publishes about itself instead: room count, treatment cabins, course lengths, whether it prices procedures separately at all.

What we don't claim

Four things this page deliberately does not say, and why. Naftalan is a live medical-tourism export push with a presidential decree behind it, so the marketing around the town is louder than the evidence underneath it. That gap is where a booking goes wrong, and naming it is cheaper than discovering it on arrival.

• We don't call naftalan a cure for psoriasis. The evidence supports "traditionally used for" and "reported to help" language during remission, not "treats" or "cures."
• We don't cite the naftalan RCT as psoriasis evidence. That trial treated oral lichen planus; using it to back a psoriasis claim is a citation error we won't make.
• We don't quote a single all-in medical price. Naftalan programs bundle room rate and treatment differently by property; we send a current quote once we know your dates, your psoriasis stage, and any other medical restrictions.
• We don't handle the clinical side. Diagnosis, flare-vs-remission staging, and course design are the sanatorium's clinical team's job, not ours.
