Tokyo to Baku flights: no direct route, one stop, and which hub is actually fastest

There is no direct flight from Japan to Azerbaijan. We checked that on 28 July 2026 and re-checked it on 11 August 2026: no nonstop service to Baku out of Narita, Haneda or Kansai, nothing coming the other way, and no launch announced.

Baku's Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD) had 36 airlines flying nonstop to 72 cities when we counted on 28 July (FlightsFrom.com). No Japanese city is on that list, and FlightConnections says the same from the other end: no direct flights from Japan, East Asia, Southeast Asia or Oceania.

So every trip connects somewhere, once. What follows is how to choose that connection point, what the journey takes in hours and yen, and what moved between our July check and our August one. Birtour is a destination management company based in Baku. We do not sell air tickets, so we have no stake in which airline you choose, and that is exactly why we can write this page.

Why every trip from Japan connects exactly once

No carrier flies Tokyo to Baku nonstop, and Azerbaijan's land borders have been shut to inbound passengers since 2020, most recently extended to 1 October 2026. That closes the two obvious workarounds at once. Everyone arriving from Japan flies in, and everyone flying in changes planes once. The only open question is where.

Azerbaijan Airlines does not serve Japan at all. Its furthest-east nonstop is Beijing. The airline's chairman and the Japanese ambassador met on 18 February 2026 and discussed the prospects of launching direct flights, which is the first movement on that file in years, but nothing was announced: no route, no date, no aircraft. We would not plan around it.

Who will sell you the whole trip on one ticket

Three carriers ticket Tokyo to Baku end to end on their own metal: Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, Qatar Airways via Doha and Lufthansa via Frankfurt. That was the position when we re-read FlightConnections on 11 August 2026. Everything else on the board is two airlines stitched together, either by an alliance or by you.

One correction to our July page. We listed Etihad via Abu Dhabi as the third routing, on the strength of the daily Narita service and the Abu Dhabi to Baku route Etihad opened on 2 March 2026. On the 11 August re-check, Abu Dhabi was not among the twelve one-stop connection points the database returned from Haneda, and Etihad was not among the carriers shown ticketing the whole trip. We cannot tell from a route database whether the pairing stopped connecting or simply stopped being sold as one itinerary. Until Etihad's own site says otherwise, treat Abu Dhabi as a connection you build yourself.

Which connection point is actually fastest

Beijing, by a wide margin: about 12 h 35 westbound and 10 h 40 on the way home. New Delhi, Dubai and Mumbai come next. Doha and Istanbul, the two hubs most people actually book, sit near 16 hours westbound. Every European hub adds another three to four hours on top of that.

The eastbound column is shorter on every single routing, by anything from 55 minutes to 1 h 55. That is the jet stream, not the schedule, and it is why the flight home lands earlier in your day than the outbound one does. When a client has one flexible day to place, we put it on the outbound side.

These are total journey times with the connection included, computed from the fastest legal pairing on a given day. They will not always add up against the segment table below, which is scheduled block time for named flights. Use the ranking to pick a hub. Use the segment times to sanity-check the itinerary you are actually holding.

Flight time by segment

Tokyo to the Gulf or to Turkey is the long leg, between 12 h 20 and 13 h 50. The hop onward into Baku adds 2 h 50 to 4 h 15. The first six rows are FlightsFrom.com scheduled route data read on 28 July 2026, not re-fetched since, so they carry the older check date on purpose. The Dubai row comes from the 11 August re-check.

The Doha to Baku spread is wide because different flights carry different scheduled block times. We cannot tell you why with confidence, so check the actual arrival time of the specific flight when you book.

Choosing the departure airport in Japan

Narita and Haneda both work for all three single-ticket carriers. Kansai has Turkish and Qatar. Chubu has no nonstop to any hub on this page, so travellers starting at Nagoya position to Haneda, Narita or Kansai first. Frequency, not flying time, is what decides which airport suits your dates.

Turkish Airlines connects Tokyo and Istanbul 19 times a week: 12 round trips from Narita, 7 from Haneda. The Narita TK300/TK301 service went from three weekly round trips to five on 16 June 2026, an increase originally planned for February 2027 and brought forward (sky-budget, 5 May 2026). Kansai has a daily flight as well (TRAICY, 17 March 2026).

Qatar Airways keeps rebuilding its Japan network. Narita has been twice daily since 17 June 2026. Kansai came back on 16 June 2026 with five weekly flights. Haneda resumed on 15 July 2026 with four weekly, going daily from 1 August 2026 (sky-budget, 15 July 2026). The Doha to Baku leg was also part of Qatar's summer 2026 network work, with 16 June 2026 attached to it; whether that was a launch or a resumption we could not settle, and Qatar has served Baku for years, so we read it as the latter.

Lufthansa is the newcomer on our list rather than on the map. It ticketed the full Tokyo to Baku itinerary through Frankfurt when we re-checked in August. Nineteen hours is a long day for a trip that can be done in sixteen, so we mention it for completeness and for anyone spending miles rather than yen.

What does a Tokyo to Baku ticket cost in 2026?

Between about 174,000 and 228,000 yen for an all-in return in economy, depending on the month you fly. December 2026 is the cheapest departure month in the series we now use, at 174,130 JPY, with October close behind at 174,580. April 2027 is the dearest published month at 227,880 JPY. These are Japanese-market totals with fuel surcharge, airport fees, the international tourist tax and the booking fee already inside.

August 2026 departures had left the series by that read, January 2027 was again absent, and the March 2027 row carried a 419,530 JPY quote we read as a thin-inventory outlier rather than a market level. We have not filled any of those gaps with a guess.

Our July version of this page quoted point prices off Trip.com and Skyscanner, and read October as the cheapest month with May and June at the top. We have stopped doing that. The same scrapes also returned a six-hour nonstop Baku to Tokyo flight and attributed direct service to a carrier that does not fly the route, and a display that gets the network wrong is not a display you can trust on price. The metasearch series disagrees with the old reading, and it keeps moving: between our 11 and 22 August reads every published row changed, the floor shifted from late summer to October and December, and the peak stayed in spring. We were using a bad instrument, and the honest thing is to say so rather than quietly re-cut the numbers.

For a cross-check against an airline's own site rather than a metasearch, Turkish Airlines was showing from 232,890 JPY out of Narita and from 242,680 JPY out of Haneda on 28 July 2026, round trip in economy, with a note that the fares had been collected within the previous 48 hours. Carrier direct sits above the metasearch band, which is the usual pattern and not a reason to distrust either.

Self-connecting carries a real risk, and it is the first thing to flag if you are booking for someone else. If the first flight is late and the second sits on a separately purchased ticket, no airline owes anyone a rebooking. Padding the layover or paying for the through ticket is a trade between money and protection.

Other routings

Beijing is the fastest connection on the board and the one Japanese travellers have mostly not considered. Dubai is third fastest but awkward to ticket end to end. Uzbekistan Airways via Tashkent shows up cheap on Japanese sites. Moscow shows up too, and we do not use it.

Beijing. Azerbaijan Airlines flies Beijing to Baku, and route data puts the segment at roughly 7 hours eastbound and about 8 h 30 westbound, the usual headwind gap. It is AZAL's furthest-east nonstop. Frequency was three a week when we checked in July, so the dates have to line up, and China's transit rules need checking separately against your passport and your connection time.

Dubai. Third fastest on the ranking, and the place a common assumption breaks: Emirates does not fly Dubai to Baku. That segment belongs to Azerbaijan Airlines and flydubai, about three hours, daily, 1,761 km, and Emirates markets it as a codeshare. We could not confirm on 11 August whether a single Emirates-ticketed Tokyo to Baku itinerary is sold, or at what through-fare. Fast on paper, fiddly to buy.

Tashkent. Uzbekistan Airways was showing 105,800 JPY one way through Tashkent on 28 July 2026. Cheap fares on this routing are real, and so is the thin frequency behind them.

The European hubs. Vienna, Frankfurt, Rome, Paris, Milan and London all connect, and Lufthansa will ticket the Frankfurt version end to end. All of them cost three to four hours more than the Gulf and Turkey.

Can you enter Azerbaijan overland instead?

Not into the country. Azerbaijan's land borders have been closed to inbound passenger traffic since 2020, and the decree extending the special quarantine regime runs to 1 October 2026. Cargo is exempt, passengers are not. The asymmetry is the useful part: someone who flew in may exit overland by road, without permission.

That makes a one-way land exit a legitimate shape for a Caucasus trip, where the reverse is not. Fly Tokyo to Baku, work east to west, and leave for Georgia by road or rail; do not plan to arrive from Tbilisi.

The Baku to Tbilisi night train came back on 25 and 26 May 2026 after six years out of service, with Stadler sleepers in comfort, comfort-plus and luxe. Baku departs 23:10 and reaches Tbilisi 08:41; the return leaves 21:00 and arrives 06:24. Daily both ways, fares from 81 manat with a quoted range of 85 to 189 by class. Tickets are reported to be restricted to Azerbaijani citizens and to nationals of visa-free countries, which since 1 July 2026 includes Japan. If that holds, a Japanese passport is in the small group that can actually board it, where a British, American or EU one cannot. We have that restriction from one well-sourced traveller account rather than from the railway itself, because ADY's own site refused every request we made to it. Check the ADY app before you build a trip around it.

What we would not recommend

Four things we steer clients away from on this route: a Moscow connection, two separate tickets stitched together, an assumption that Abu Dhabi still books as an off-the-shelf one stop, and Azerbaijan's own tourism site as your source on the visa.

A Moscow connection. The routing exists and Japanese booking sites sometimes rank it first when you sort by price. We do not offer it. Check the connection point before you pay, every time.

Self-connected tickets on a long-haul day. One connection, one long leg, and no rebooking obligation if the first flight slips. Pad the layover or buy the through ticket. On this route we would buy the protection.

Abu Dhabi as an off-the-shelf one stop. It was on our July list and it is not on the August one. Build it yourself if you want it, and price the risk in the paragraph above.

azerbaijan.travel for the visa position. Azerbaijan's own outward-facing tourism site was still showing the pre-waiver e-visa position for Japan when we looked on 11 August 2026, six weeks after the waiver started. The Japanese embassy's own page is the one to read.

From the airport into Baku

Heydar Aliyev International Airport sits northeast of the city, a 30 to 40 minute drive depending on traffic. The Aero Express bus (H1) runs to 28 May station for 1.30 AZN but takes no cash. Taxis and ride-hailing both work. Terminal 1 is international, Terminal 2 domestic, about 200 metres apart.

On the distance, English Wikipedia says 20 km and local operators say about 25 km; the sources disagree and the drive time is the number that matters anyway. Anyone connecting to the domestic flight to Nakhchivan makes the 200-metre terminal walk as part of the transfer.

Aero Express (H1). Per the airport's official site, the fare is 1.30 AZN and the route runs from Terminals 1 and 2 across the Surakhani bridge and past Koroghlu metro station, terminating at 28 May station beside the Baku railway station. It runs every 20 minutes from 06:00 to 23:15 and every 45 minutes from 23:15 to 06:00, taking 15 to 30 minutes into town.

Here is the part that catches people on arrival: the bus does not take cash. You need a BAKU KART transport card, and the vending machines that sell it accept cash only, so you need manat in hand before you leave the arrivals hall. The card is widely quoted at 2 AZN, though the transport operator does not publish a current card price on its own fare page, so carry a little more than you expect to need. One card can be shared by several people, and it works on the metro and city buses too.

The metro single ride is 0.60 AZN. It went up from 0.50 on 1 October 2025, so any guide still printing 0.50 is out of date, and the operator's own fare-history text has not caught up either. Trains run 06:00 to midnight across three lines and 27 stations. How the cards, the QR tickets and the turnstiles work is on our Baku metro guide.

Taxis: marshals for the official rank stand in the second lane outside Terminal 1. The airport's site does not publish fares. Third-party guides quote 30 to 55 AZN to the centre (bht.az, 25 June 2025; Azerbaijan Traveller, updated 7 July 2026). That is a wide spread, so agree the price before getting in.

Ride-hailing: Bolt, Uber and Yango all operate. The price shows on screen before you commit, which removes the negotiation.

If you are travelling on one of our tours, we meet the arrival at the airport, late-night flights included. Everything above applies only when the transfer is your own to solve.

Visa, and what happens after you land

Japanese passport holders need no visa for tourist entry to Azerbaijan between 1 July 2026 and 1 July 2027. The waiver allows three entries, up to 30 days each. Any stay of 15 days or more has to be registered with the State Migration Service, normally by your hotel, and missing that registration draws a fine on exit.

The conditions and exceptions are on our visa guide. Much of what is published in Japanese has not caught up with the change, and neither has Azerbaijan's own tourism site, so it is worth reading before departure.
