Tokyo to Baku flights: no direct route, one stop, 15 to 17 hours in the air

There is no direct flight from Japan to Azerbaijan. When we checked on 28 July 2026, no nonstop service to Baku was operating from Narita, Haneda or Kansai, and no launch has been announced.

Baku's Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD) has 36 airlines flying nonstop to 72 cities (FlightsFrom.com). No Japanese city is on that list, and a second route database, FlightConnections, states it plainly: no direct flights from Japan, East Asia, Southeast Asia or Oceania.

So every trip connects somewhere, once. What follows is how to choose that connection point, and what the journey actually takes in hours and yen. The three one-stop routes

All three land in the 15-to-17-hour band. The real difference between them is not the flying time; it is the length of the layover and what time of day you leave Japan and arrive in Baku.

The Doha to Baku spread is wide because different flights carry different scheduled block times. We cannot tell you why with confidence, so check the actual arrival time of the specific flight when you book.

Choosing the departure airport in Japan

2026 has been a year of movement on the routes between Japan and the Gulf and Turkey, and the picture in July is not the picture from a year ago.

Turkish Airlines connects Tokyo and Istanbul 19 times a week: 12 round trips from Narita, 7 from Haneda. The Narita TK300/TK301 service went from three weekly round trips to five on 16 June 2026, an increase originally planned for February 2027 and brought forward (sky-budget, 5 May 2026). Kansai has a daily flight as well (TRAICY, 17 March 2026).

Qatar Airways keeps rebuilding its Japan network. Narita has been twice daily since 17 June 2026. Kansai came back on 16 June 2026 with five weekly flights. Haneda resumed on 15 July 2026 with four weekly, going daily from 1 August 2026 (sky-budget, 15 July 2026). As we write this, the Haneda service is in its second week back.

Etihad Airways flies EY801 daily from Narita to Abu Dhabi on an A380. The Abu Dhabi to Baku route opened on 2 March 2026 with ten weekly flights (Etihad press release, 15 July 2025). Before March 2026, the Abu Dhabi routing did not exist.

Starting from Kansai or Chubu, the workable options are the Turkish or Qatar flights out of Kansai. Nagoya has no nonstop to any of the three hubs, so travellers starting there position to Haneda, Narita or Kansai first.

Fares, and the day we checked them

Airfares move daily. The figures below are what we saw on 28 July 2026, and there is no guarantee the same numbers will appear again.

Put the four numbers side by side and a pattern shows: a single-airline, one-stop round trip runs somewhere around 170,000 to 250,000 JPY, and anything cheaper is usually two or more separate tickets you connect yourself. That is our reading of these four listings, not a published statistic.

Self-connecting carries a real risk, and it is the first thing to flag if you are booking for someone else. If the first flight is late and the second sits on a separately purchased ticket, no airline owes anyone a rebooking. Padding the layover or paying for the through ticket is a trade between money and protection.

On Skyscanner's display, October was the cheapest month, followed by January, August and September. May and June sat at 168,000 to 177,000 JPY, the high side of the year.

Other routings

Beijing works. Azerbaijan Airlines flies Beijing to Baku three times a week on a Boeing 787, about 8 h 30 for the segment (FlightsFrom.com, checked by us on 28 July 2026). Three weekly flights means the dates have to line up, and China's transit procedures need checking separately.

Dubai also works on paper. Dubai to Baku is a high-frequency segment, about 93 flights a month. The catch is that the Japan to Dubai leg and the Baku leg usually sit with different airlines, which makes a through ticket hard to build.

Moscow is a routing we do not offer. On Japanese booking sites, sorting by price sometimes puts Russian connections at the top. Check the connection point every time.

From the airport into Baku

Heydar Aliyev International Airport sits northeast of the city centre. On the distance, English Wikipedia says 20 km and local operators say about 25 km; the sources disagree. The actual drive is 30 to 40 minutes depending on traffic.

International flights use Terminal 1; domestic flights and a few airlines use Terminal 2, about 200 metres away. Anyone connecting to the domestic flight to Nakhchivan makes that walk as part of the transfer.

Aero Express (H1) is the bus between the airport and the city. Per the airport's official site, the fare is 1.30 AZN and the route runs from Terminals 1 and 2 across the Surakhani bridge and past Koroghlu metro station, terminating at 28 May station beside the Baku railway station. It runs every 20 minutes from 06:00 to 23:15 and every 45 minutes from 23:15 to 06:00, taking 15 to 30 minutes into town.

Here is the part that catches people on arrival: the bus does not take cash. You need a BAKU KART transport card, the card itself costs 2 AZN, and the vending machines that sell it accept cash only. So you need manat in hand before you leave the arrivals hall. One card can be shared by several people, and it works on the metro and city buses too.

Taxis: marshals for the official rank stand in the second lane outside Terminal 1. The airport's site does not publish fares. Third-party guides quote 30 to 55 AZN to the centre (bht.az, 25 June 2025; Azerbaijan Traveller, updated 7 July 2026). That is a wide spread, so agree the price before getting in.

Ride-hailing: Bolt, Uber and Yango all operate. The price shows on screen before you commit, which removes the negotiation.

Visa, and what happens after you land

Japanese passport holders need no visa for tourist entry to Azerbaijan from 1 July 2026 to 1 July 2027. The conditions and exceptions are on our visa guide; much of what is published in Japanese has not caught up with the change yet, so it is worth reading before departure.

Once you land, we arrange ground transport, hotels, Japanese-speaking guides (confirmed per booking) and entrance tickets.
