Places to visit in Azerbaijan: choose the right regions

The best places to visit in Azerbaijan are the ones that fit the same route and the time you actually have. Baku and nearby Gobustan make a practical first base. Sheki and Gabala belong to a westbound journey; Quba and Khinalig form a northern choice. Lankaran is a southern nature and food route, while Nakhchivan needs a separate flight-sector decision. Treating them all as quick Baku day trips produces more driving than visiting.

Baku: the first base, not the whole country

Baku combines the walled Old City, the oil-boom-era centre, museums and the Caspian Boulevard. A first day can be mostly on foot; a second can focus on museums or contemporary architecture. The capital is a good base for nearby excursions, but not for every region. A late flight arrival is a hotel night, not a full sightseeing day. Gobustan and Absheron: two different road days near Baku

Gobustan's rock-art landscape lies south of Baku. The official tourism guide describes the petroglyphs and museum; the mud-volcano leg needs a separate vehicle and surface-access check. This is a strong addition for archaeology and landscape interests without moving the Baku hotel.

On a different direction, Ateshgah and Yanardag tell the Absheron fire-heritage story. Choose this pair when that history matters more than a second museum day. Compare the Baku day trips before putting both out-of-city loops on the same day; the exact sequence depends on transport and site hours.

Sheki and Gabala: a westbound trip worth an overnight

Sheki's historic centre is the clearest regional choice for visitors drawn to the Silk Roads, architecture, craft workshops and the Khan's Palace. Gabala is a western mountain and resort-area choice and can be an overnight or a measured stop on the way to Sheki. It is not interchangeable with Sheki's historic-city appeal. Choose the priority before booking: mountain time, family activities, nature or heritage. Quba, Khinalig and Shahdag: choose the northern mountain arm

Quba makes a northern base. Khinalig is a highland village, while the Gusar/Shahdag area is a different mountain-activity option. The Tourism Board's Guba–Gusar map separates these sites and roads. Weather, snow, vehicle suitability and any protected-area rules should be checked close to departure. Do not sell Khinalig as a guaranteed drive on every date.

This northern arm competes for the same limited days as Sheki and Gabala. If you have only five days including flights, choose one direction. With children or a snow goal: choose the activity before the region

For a family, “places to visit” is a different question from “how many attractions can fit.” A Baku base keeps hotel changes down; add one mountain overnight only if the transfer, room allocation and selected activity suit the children's ages. For snow, do not choose a place from a winter photo or a calendar month alone. Ganja and Lake Goygol: a deeper western extension

Ganja and Lake Goygol are better treated as an added western chapter than as incidental stops on a short Baku–Sheki round trip. Lankaran or Nakhchivan: special-interest extensions

Lankaran suits travellers drawn to a different climate, tea culture, regional cuisine and nature. The official Lankaran guide places the region between the Caspian and Talysh Mountains and describes nearby reserves. Choose it as a southern extension rather than a quick diversion from a Sheki itinerary.

Nakhchivan is distinct again. The Tourism Board's regional guide presents its separate heritage and landscapes. Build it around current flights, hotel nights and site access. Do not assume an overland continuation from mainland Azerbaijan is available to your party; confirm the applicable entry and transit rules before making a promise.
